Hervey Bay is the best place in the world to see Humpback Whales whether for the juvenials that are people curious (known as August whales) or the Mothers and Calves which arrive from early September through to the end of October. My focus is only on the whales but there are various trips to K'Gari (formerly Fraser Island) either by organised bus tours, self drive or by boat to the West side where kyaking and beach tours plus whale watching in season is available. I travelled to Hervey Bay for the Whale Watching and wasn't disappointed. I took three tours on three different boats and saw whales on all three outings, some very close to the boat. We also saw sea turtles, dolphins and sea birds. The weather was perfect, with mainly sunny days and light winds during my stay. Access from Brisbane was easy and the roads were good and well maintained. There are plenty of good food options and cafes opened early (5:30am near where I was staying) so you can grab a hearty breakfast early and head off for the day to maximise your time in the area. The complex was secure and quiet with many permanent residents. The apartment was well appointed with a full kitchen and comfortable beds. Near to the Hervey Bay Boat Club. We organised several boat trips through the Boat Club and they were fabulous. We also had a meal there and enjoyed drinks on the deck.
