Somewhere to Love
Surrounded by Lake Geneva and glorious Alpine peaks, tranquil Montreux has enchanted artistes through the ages. Lord Byron was so inspired by the style and setting of waterfront Château de Chillon that he wrote a poem about it. Nowadays it is one of Switzerland’s most popular attractions.
Freddie Mercury also fell in love with Montreux and a lakefront statue in Place du Marché commemorates this former resident in typical pose, with one arm raised to the heavens. Queen fans flock here for the annual Memorial Day, just one musical festival hosted by this town. The most famous is the 2-week Montreux Jazz Festival, held in the Music & Convention Centre.
On the opposite side of town is Audiorama (the Swiss National Audiovisual Museum), near a funicular railway which climbs the hill. Further up the slopes is the family-friendly Rochers-de-Naye ski area, while the Les Pléiades pistes overlook neighbouring Vevey. Down at the quayside wooden chalets house stalls of the annual Christmas market.
Summer activities include boat trips, hiking and the Montreux-Oberland-Bernois narrow gauge railway whose trains allow you to really savour the views…and a nice cup of coffee.
The train station also connects to Geneva, site of the nearest airport, and Booking.com offers luxury hotels, apartments with views and cheap B&Bs nearby.

After visiting bigger towns, Montreux was a refreshing quieter cousin. Made the most of the Montreux travel pass. Allowing free bus and train travel as far as Vervey. I would suggest when travelling by train further afield to get help from the ticket office, as this will save you money. The free Queen Studio tour is worth a visit, located in the Casino. Boat trips are a must, we did a circular 2.5 hr one and it was worth paying the small amount extra for the first class. Chateaux Chillon is worth a visit, and only a 40 minute stroll back to the town, along the beautiful shore of lake Geneva.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

Montreux is a beautiful town, located on Lake Geneva, surrounded by mountains. Great dining, lovely flower lined promenade stretching for several kilometres along the lakeside. Great train services to many parts of Switzerland, especially the Golden Pass Express, which runs between Montreux and Interlaken, travelling through amazing landscapes, Special mention if you are a Queen fan is the Freddie Tour, which is an amazing tour and commentary about the time that Freddie Mercury and the band spent in Montreux's Mountain Studios, and the town, visiting locations where they hung out, and learning a true insight to Freddie. Montreux was a nice location to go to Rocher de Naye. There were some great walks in the neighbourhood like 'Gorges de Chauderons'. There are plenty of bars and restaurants. We were there for the Montreux Jazz Festival and also did Roche the Naze, Mont Pelerrin, castle Chillon and the old Town which was really spectacular. The festival is a must do and hopefully we can return. We dined at Safran in the Mona Hotel excellent. The Fouquet at the casino- could do better, and also Montreux Jazz Cafe. We were there for the Jazz festival; a wonderful eclectic selection of bands and artists in a beautiful location along the Montreux shoreline. But it would have been almost as good, at any other time. The lakeside location with its embankement/shoreline path, running for miles to east and west simply invites endless ambling. Swimming from the rocks is lovely, as is stopping at the various bars and cafe's that puntuate the shoreline. The reception staff were extremely helpful and accommodating, the hotel was spotless, and we really appreciated its excellent location. We visited Montreux for the festival, and this hotel turned out to be very convenient for us. The only small downside was the paid parking across the street, which is not part of the hotel. Perfect location at the end of the platform at the train station. We did not get disturbed by the trains at all.
