Out of a Fairytale
The half-timbered buildings, cobbled streets and brightly painted façades of medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber wouldn’t be out of place in a fairytale. Several fantastical films have been set in this gem on the scenic Romantic Road, passing from Würzburg to Füssen via Bavaria’s most enchanting towns.
Uniquely designed gates allow access to the historic centre through walls partly covered with tiled roofs. Walking along the walls offers a different perspective of the town’s colourful flowers, step gables and towers. The town hall has the tallest tower, whose far-reaching views include the large Marktplatz, home of the Christmas market. The Christmas Museum is a year-round winter wonderland, as is the shop of Käthe Wohlfahrt, the internationally renowned German Christmas decoration producer.
On a different note, the Crime Museum houses medieval torture instruments including a ducking stool. Holy Blood and Last Supper altarpieces form the focal point of towering St James’ Church, a stop on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route.
In the River Tauber valley outside the centre are lush gardens, one containing Toppler Castle, a bizarre structure resembling a house on a tower. Also in the valley is a double-arched stone bridge.

I visited Rothenburg 14 years ago & couldn't wait to get back. This time I brought my 2 adult children who just loved it & will be bringing their children one day. Very sorry to hear Anneliese Frieze had passed away. Lovely lady. We walked the whole town, did lots of fantastic shopping. My son & daughter climbed the town hall tower & did the Night watchman walk, which they thoroughly enjoyed. We had our dinners at our hotel, Gasthaus Alter Keller & loved the food & great staff. Whilst the town is always full of visitors from all over the...
Whilst the town is always full of visitors from all over the world, it’s a magical place, so do visit. Over the past 40 years this must have been my 8th or 9th visit and it never fails to disappoint. A remarkable town.

We arrived around 1pm, and left the following day around 11am. I could have stayed another day. The town is quite large and while the day trippers come in and see the main street, there is so much more to do here - side streets to wander and shop, the city walls and outside the walls - many walking and biking paths. The town is always busy.
The town is always busy. If you like nature and walking, I recommend the area surrounding Rothenburg. The landscape is beautiful. I would recommend going up the Rathaus tower and viewing the town from way up.Guest review byKoch

It is in one of those cute, old half-timbered houses. The owner was friendly and upgraded me to a double room. The room was basic but very clean. Breakfast was also good with varieties of bread, cheese, cold cuts, yoghurt, fruit and berries.
