Sea, Oysters and Europe’s Tallest Sand Dune
Arcachon is a French resort on the Atlantic coast, about 55 km from the city of Bordeaux. Known for its oyster farms, Dune of Pyla, the long sandy beaches and the Victorian houses, this seaside city is a perfect holiday destination.
Set among the ocean and a pine forest, the breathtaking Great Dune of Pyla is the tallest sand dune in Europe. Reaching a height of about 107 metres and a length of 3 km, this natural miracle is a massive hill ideal for paragliding.

We enjoyed walking on the beach, strolling round the interesting streets in town, eating at the restaurants and taking the boat across to Cap du Ferrett. It is a clean, well looked after town with a buzz to it. The gardens are well worth a stroll with a climb up the Belvedere tower for a view. At the Cap du Ferrett we walked along the beach to the oyster shacks and had a delicious feast of oysters and prawns. We loved the town, we enjoyed the variety of shops and restaurants. The beach was awesome. We visited Dune Pilat, climbed to the top and were astounded by the views. Loved the dunes.
Loved the dunes. Very difficult to park but our holiday was in peak season so understandable. Quality of food not great and expensive. Beautiful place! The waitress in Diego's restaurant on the front was very patient and helpful with our group of 14. Food delicious, not cheap, but well worth it... we went back a second night. We were travelling with our dog and dogs were not allowed on the beaches or the boardwalk. We thought it was quite built up. All the promenade was being dug up while we were there so that affected our view of the place. A sophisticated, small beach resort located on the southern shores of Arcachon bay. Take a trip on the ferry boats to Cap Ferret and Andernos to enjoy the real oyster tasting experience. Taxis are available if needed, but you can walk around Arcachon with ease.
