The City of Popes

Located in Southern France, Avignon is the largest capital of the department of Vaucluse. Classified as a UNESCO world Heritage Site, the charming city centre is home to the palace of the popes, Rocher des Doms, and the bridge of Avignon.

The historic Palais des Papes is one of the most significant medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. Set within a square with the same name, the Papal Palace is an important tourist attraction where you can see the pope’s private chambers and frescoes by Matteo Giovannetti.

Le Pont d’Avignon was built in the Middle Ages and, according to the legend, a young shepherd called Benezet was inspired by angels to build the bridge. The children’s song "Sur Le Pont D'Avignon" is now famous all over the world.

The beautiful gardens of Rocher des Doms are ideal for a promenade or picnic. Featuring a large pond, swans, ducks and lush vegetation, this place is perfect for relaxing moments. From the top, you can enjoy the views of the Rhône.

You can stay in one of Avignons' hotels, apartments and B&Bs that Booking.com offers. Situated in the village of Montfavet, Avignon-Caumont Airport is only 8 km away from Avignon.

Avignon is a lovely city with so much history to the town as well as close by towns. You can see most of the major sites in one day and can easily travel to other towns like Nimes and Arles. We enjoyed wandering the streets and looking into the cute shops and eating at the restaurants.

Avignon is a brilliant location for your stay in Provence.

Avignon is a brilliant location for your stay in Provence. Initially, we had looked at staying in one of the villages of Provence but on finding a great apartment decided to base ourselves in Avignon. This was the best decision and it worked out very well. We were able to go for day trips to towns like Les Beau, Gourdes, Roussillon and St Remy while also staying close to restaurants, markets and the beautiful historic sights of Avignon. I'd highly recommend this as a base and if possible stay as close to the old town as possible so that you can walk to everything.

Loved the City of Avignon and on our boat to the Popes Palace there was a supplementary exhibition of Jean-Michel Orthoniel exhibition which is amazing. On until January so would highly recommend. Lots of tiny theatres in the Bohemian area around St Claire’s. Food was excellent and good value for money. A gem of a place in Provence.

Avignon is a city best explored by walking. The old town is lively, specially at night with plenty of restaurants to choose from. An evening meal at Le Bercail, with a view of Le Pont d'Avignon, is an experience not to be missed. The cuisine and setting is amazing.

We had a car so we took day trips to surrounding towns in Provence before leaving Avignon to head up to Lyon, then Amboise, then Paris. I wish we had devoted more time to exploring Avignon itself without driving somewhere else every day. Next time I'd plan more time to just hang out in Avignon, and go to the museums, shop, visit close by locations (walking or biking), etc.

Host met us in person after we arrived by car, to show us where to park and how to use the facilities. This was the best apartment we had stayed during our entire France trip ( 3 weeks). The location was opposite the wall and the large multi-storey carpark directly access to the unit is a plus. The photo was identical with the actual unit. Highly recommended.

Great place to relax and take a break from exploring the mideval cities of southern France. Small, but nice indoor pool and a beautiful garden (we were visiting in December, so did not spend time there, but ìt seemed it would be really inviting in warmer months). Very good breakfast. We also had dinner at hotel restaurant and it was delicious.

Room was great really big, excellent lay out. Definitely the best of the Stop Over hotels I visited while driving through France. Similar cost to the other hotels I stayed at but unquestionably the quality in every aspect was superior. I was very pleasantly surprised. Excellent breakfasts, nice looking hotel.
