The Annex room with private bathroom was very good. The description of having to climb 40 stairs to the annex rooms is misleading. It was not a straight up 40 Steps but definitely not for those traveling with suitcases. Loved the closeness to the cathedral which allowed free unlimited walking in the cathedral and on the grounds all day. Breakfast was sit down by time skits and offered a fabulous huge choice. The rooms bathroom was big and the room had a large smart tv. Internet signal was strong. Definitely the place to stay if you’re a pilgrim starting the Via Francigena because you feel your right in the centre of this beautiful religious sanctuary.

Best location , not far from Canterbury West station. The WestGate Tower and WestGate garden , the attractions are just a few walk away. The staffs are friendly and full of service minded. We had been changed the attic room to the ground floor because of the large luggages , the room is nice and wider .

FAQs about hotels in Canterbury

Heavenly Heritage and Literary Legend

Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.

River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.

From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.

In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

At every step you are looking at history, the centre of the city is full of ancient buildings and tourists and students from all over the world. There are lots of lovely restaurants- we ate at an Arabian place one evening. The cathedral is perfect, one of our reasons to visit was for my partner to visit the archives. I went to Mass and visited the Hear Us! graffiti exhibition- quite challenging. The cobbles are also challenging for the less mobile, but it's worth it

    Loads of places to eat.

Loads of places to eat. A lovely medieval feel about the place. So many lovely old buildings. Too many very large groups of (schooĺl/kind-of-supervised) kids. The massive centre is mainly cobbled narrow streets with no cars! The cathedral is wondrous. We ate at Pho Canterbury - Vietnamese, The Olive Grove - Mediterranean, Posillipo - Italian. Would return to any of them. All first class.

I was there for a conference, so I wasn't sight seeing. I've been before for a break and it was great. Lots to do and see. Last time I did a boat tour on the river. Some of the younger delegates at my conference went for a Karaoke night.

I came to a gathering of the Cathedral Music Trust.

I came to a gathering of the Cathedral Music Trust. The Cathedral could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Great range of music. Canterbury is very user friendly: huge choice of places to eat and drink and at reasonable prices. Lots and lots of history - the cradle of English Christianity. Everything is within a reasonable if not easy walking distance huge variety of early and later buildings: a living book on English architecture. Seething with humanity and vitality given the student population and closeness to continent. Note the prairy planting in the cathedral close. Good sign posting and information boards.

Canterbury is 'bathed' in much history and archcitecture that reminds of you how well and asthetic thinking went into buildings made a few hundred years ago. Restaurants tea/coffee rooms are abundant. Good shopping area with all you could wish for. Make the most of culture with a museum etc, two theatres and some great pubs with lots of character!!!!! Find 'The Parrot' pub (14th century) out of the way but well worth a visit! Don't forget the cathedral - beautiful...even if you only look at it from the outside! We are 'city freaks' and so glad we made sure that Canterbury was an experience we haven't missed! You can easily get a train to Margate and other destinations.,

    The cathedral was fantastic.

The cathedral was fantastic. The light and sound show was very atmospheric and worth the money. Good range of shops and luckily our hotel had its own parking although that was an extra cost. All in all it was a great short break (3 nights). We come from suburbs of London so it was only an hour and a half drive.

The hotel was only a 7 minute walk to Canterbury town centre but was on a quiet calm little street. The room size was great and it was lovely and warm with a spare blanket. There was a kettle and a coffee pot to make teas and coffees as well as a little fridge if we had anything we wanted to keep in there. The bed was super comfy and shower was lovely. Self check in and out was particularly handy and very secure and safe.
