FAQs about hotels in Inverness

Gateway to the Highlands and Loch Ness

A jewel with historic buildings and charming streets, Inverness is surrounded by a typical Scottish Highland landscape. It is located 10 km from Loch Ness, along the mouth of the Ness River and the Moray Firth coast. It is regarded as the northernmost city in the United Kingdom, and capital of the Highlands.

Take a walk around the Old Town, visit St Andrew’s Cathedral, and make a stopover in the charming Victorian Market. The Old High St Stephen's Church is the oldest building in town, and has been a religious site since pre-Christian times.

The Inverness Castle overlooks the river and is nowadays the seat of the Sheriff Court. A hotel in Inverness city centre is ideal to enjoy the different cultural and recreational activities in town.

Watch the Atlantic salmon jumping out the river near the Ness Islands, and try to catch a glimpse of the famous monster of Loch Ness. The Cairngorms National Park is 40 km away, and Chanonry Point is the best spot to watch dolphins, just 24 km away.

Inverness hotels include a large offer of small, cosy guest houses, B&B’s, and rural cottages, allowing a closer contact with the nature. Don’t miss the Inverness accommodation deals on Booking.com!

Inverness is very central to interesting places to visit.

Inverness is very central to interesting places to visit. There are plenty of restaurants in Inverness within easy walking distance. We particularly enjoyed Johnny Foxes. If you do not have a car, there is a convenient train station and bus station (both of which we used) We visited Balmoral, Cairngorms, Aviemore - they were all excellent

It took a while to find a real pub, but the Glenalbyn was great. Way too many glitzy bars or eateries pretending to be pubs though. Homeless people seem a problem, though the guy selling the Big Issue outside the railway station was great, friendly and good for directions, it was the others begging who were a worry.

I've been to Inverness before and always enjoyed the atmosphere in this city. If you want to experience more of the Highlands, book your tours ahead of time. Whatever tour you book, it's always worth it. The scenery is extraordinary and listen to the locals: their accent gives you a very special feeling during your stay. That is priceless.

Did not spend any time in the city, I’m not a city person so I was delighted that Glamness has the vibe of the grounds of some country house that it may once have been. The owners have thought carefully about the siting of the cabins for privacy and convenience. The cabins are newly done and super clean. Easy self check in and out. This was the ideal spot to finish our coast to coast cycle ride. Few facilities in the area so a trip to tescos and use the self catering facilities was the best option.

The night life was very lively.

The night life was very lively. However, that might have been due to the Loch Ness Marathon event on Sunday, with around 10,000 runners, and more friends, family and supporters in the town, including myself. All the pubs and restaurants were packed on Saturday night and the train leaving on Monday morning had standing room only. It was a lovely town, with the beautiful, wide, River Ness flowing through it. There seemed to be lots of space to move around and crossing the roads was easy during the day. There a number of lovely parks nearby, including the Torvean parkrun, which I tried out on Saturday.

The train station is right in the main part of town.

The train station is right in the main part of town. Lots of hotels are easy walking distance, even hauling luggage! We went out of Inverness to the Loch, to see Urquhart Castle and out on the Firth, which were great experiences, but I wish we had had the time to also see the museum and go on a walking tour of Inverness itself. We did use GetYourGuide to meet a lovely woman who made us lunch in her home with locally foraged ingredients, and then we engaged her to take us around Inverness a bit and out to Culloden. Well worth the cost! We enjoyed McGregor's Whisky Experience and had a great meal at Auctioneer's Pub. We spent some time at Hootenanny's, but I would have liked to have more time to listen to even more music at more locales. Leaky's bookstore is worth a drop-by. I found some lovely old prints there. And if you are headed into the Highland Moors for hiking, go to Graham's across the street from the Castle. Great products, the quality you need for a moorland trek, and the staff were fabulous!

We spent a lovely holiday here! The host was super kind and nice to talk with, he gave us a warm welcome and a lot of useful info. The room was lovely, clean and the bed was so comfortable! Everything was just perfect. The breakfast was rich and prepared by the host. The center of Inverness was easy to reach from the B&B. We will go there for sure if we will be back to Scotland!

Close to some local attractions such as Culloden, and there seemed to be a bus stop and restaurants nearby. The food at the hotel was very good quality. Receptionist was in good spirits upon check in. Seemed to recognise 'Genius' members as we received a free drink (the only hotel that did so on our Scotland trip)

We were travelling to Scotland for work and only had a couple of days for holidays in Inverness. This Guesthouse was all we needed for a place to stay in the area and catch our various tours from. Mandy, the hostess, went over and above to help us with all our needs, exceeding all of our expectations.
