There's a really small beach in Leigh-on-Sea (I imagine this could get crowded in peak summer), but what's great is that it's so easy to walk along the coast line. We walked all the way to Southend with 3 kids (8, 6 and 2 - no buggy as we didn't think it would be suitable for a buggy. However, it would have been fine) which was super fun and they had lots of fun running down to the beach and finding shells on our way. We ate outside at the Crooked Billet. I had the steak and ale pie which was good, but the fish and chips were, according to my husband, 'the best he's ever had'. There's the Osborne Bros Cafe right next door which has an incredible array of fresh seafood from crab rolls, to punnets of cockles, mussels, prawns, jellied eels and more. You can eat those outside too. I got a dressed crab which I ate at home. We stayed at the start of Leigh Hill and it was convenient to head to the Tesco for supplies, but there's also some lovely cafes and shops along the Broadway too. This was the only strip we went to - there's more shops and cafes further up on Leigh Road. My kids really liked the charity shops along the Broadway. Weirdly, despite all the lovely cafes, we ended up in a Wimpy which was great value for kids. We also did a walk to Two Tree Island (nature reserve) which I recommend - it's a short walk to get to (and if you're driving, there's a small parking area) and lovely to walk around. There's a model airplane place in it so expect to see some planes doing loop-the-loops above your head! Note: If you're after a beach holiday, this isn't the best - there's a small beach, but it's mostly estuary. However, that didn't stop us having lots of fun on the patch of sand we visited, and if you walk further up towards Southend, there's more beach - a mix of pebbles / shingle and sand.

Leigh-on-Sea is a very pleasant place to visit.

Leigh-on-Sea is a very pleasant place to visit. Nice views, buildings and lots of nice restaurants. We would not stay in the same place which looks like a building site. The steps into the kitchen come living room are dangerous. Far to steep and narrow.

This is a lovely coastal town not far from Southend airport and with excellent train links to London. Of significant interest for the history buffs, this area played its part in the war effort. Whilst it’s more commercialised these days, Leigh still retains its character and Old Leigh is charming and quaint. You are spoiled for choice for things to do - there is something to please everyone!
