So many good points. Asked for a ground floor room and this was provided. Plenty of parking space. Outside seating space was really good if it had stopped raining! The staff was brilliant, a credit to the Chequers Inn.

The camping pod was really cosy and clean, much roomier and more comfortable than I expected. The pods are really well kitted out with kitchenware and home comforts, which is perfect for a solo traveller who can't carry too much with them. Lovely little coffee/tea hamper provided and the hob was really easy to use. The pods are warm and well lit, with a great little decking area to sit out on into the evening. Very comfortable beds and bedding, plenty of towels in the shower room and all the little extra things you might need have been thought of. I would highly recommend the Scallows and would love to visit again myself one day.

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. I have mobility problems, which they addressed. They also waived a need to book food in advance for our party, which was above the limit for general bar service.

The lack of maintenance generally, broken radiator covers,...

The lack of maintenance generally, broken radiator covers, equipment not working and not repaired/replaced when reported, threadbare carpet, bathroom fans and towel rail, mould and dirt in the nonventilated bathroòm, damaged wallpaper, hole in the walk, standard of redecoration very poor and long overdue. Breakfast adequate but the duty chef, 21/10/23. Needs to be retrained, the standard of the food at dinner on 20th was not good with one of our party having to wait ages for his meal. At the moment October 2023 this hotel cannot be regarded as adequate as its 4 star listing and after spending over£400 for a 2 night stay with dinner 1 night I feel let down especially as it was a treat for my wife's birthday. I have lodged a complaint, time will tell!

The staff were friendly, polite and helpful. It's the first hotel we have stayed in that informed us about the fire safety and where to muster. The room was lovely and light and a good size. There was a fan in the room which was a godsend as it was a hot weekend. We ate in the restaurant both evenings and breakfast. Good variety at breakfast, also good idea that you order cooked breakfast rather than have it all cooked under heat lamp (less waste for the company also fresher). Good choice for evening meal. All in all we had a great stay.

It's the second time my husband and I say in that hotel. I love the idea that it is not a big place, so it feels more familiar if you know what I mean. Staff is very friendly, food is delicious. The breakfast buffet was very fresh and you can see the effort they put on that. Shower was nice with good pressure. Bed was comfortable. Location is very good for us. Tha's why we always choose them when we go to that part of the country.

Review courtesy of my husband who stayed here for work:- Great breakfast and I also enjoyed an evening meal there. The bar was welcoming and great for meeting up with friends. My room was very clean and comfortable and Maresfield is a lovely quiet village, with Uckfield only a few minutes away (by car) for shops and facilities.

The hotel was in a great location for us to stay for a family wedding. The rooms we had, 3 in the main house, were spotlessly clean and spacious. The beds were comfy. Most staff were happy and helpful, especially the evening staff in the bar. Excellent parking.
