The Spirit of the North
A former Industrial Revolution hub, Newcastle has reinvented itself into a vibrant, forward-thinking city. Although no longer brewed here, Newcastle Brown Ale, or Newkie Brown, is synonymous with the city, so it’s no surprise that the nightlife is fantastic.
From the O2 Academy to the Sage Music Centre, the Newcastle music venues are among the best in England. The city also has a thriving arts scene, including The Biscuit Factory – Britain’s largest original art store.
Equally as good is the Newcastle shopping. The Central Arcade is in an attractive Victorian building, and across the River Tyne in Gateshead is the Metro Centre, Europe’s largest shopping and leisure complex. Indeed, these 2 cities have a healthy rivalry that plays out in sport, architecture and, sometimes, the bizarre.
Gateshead boasts the Angel of The North, a huge statue that is already its most recognised (and controversial) symbol. While in Newcastle the Vampire Rabbit sits above a door near St Nicholas’ Cathedral. Newcastle United Football Club has the most prestigious record, but Gateshead Stadium has seen many a star compete at its international athletics meets.

Newcastle is special. We lie in the North East of England but are so not English. Famous for the following: NUFC Carabou Cup winners 2025. Shearers Bar under, China town and the Irish club just across the way. All very friendly History: The Roman Wall and England's Biggest National Park just north Castles: Lots and a day out in the castle in Newcastle is a trip and a half: historians staff the place and take you on a wee historical excursion Cheap as Chips: We still offer lovely hotel rooms for cost effective prices bacpacking beds for under £20 Camping: England's Best two campsites. Springhill farm in Seahouses and Hadrians Wall campsite near the Sill Nightlife: Theatre, Pubs and nightclubs a foodies paradise Hiking: It's Northumberland !! Such a lovely place is Newcastle.its great for shopping and seeing the history of the city. But mostly, is the friendliness of the people. Certainly felt safe. Even walking in the evening. Great places to eat, I recommend Pho The food was delious and price was good too. Also Babucho, amazing food and great for special occasions. Brilliant service at both restaurants. Wetherspoons is another. With 3 floors you'll always find a seat and breakfast was lush. It is easy getting round Newcastle, either walking, bus which has many buses going to different areas and Uber if your in a hurry. We stayed for two nights - beginning and end of a bike trip. The first night the room was very hot and right next to the train tracks. They did have good soundproofing but it wasn't a great room. The second night we had a lovely view of the castle and could open the window to get some air. Both rooms had FABULOUS bathtubs that we enjoyed using.
