FAQs about hotels in Oxford

City of Dreaming Spires

Boasting magnificent academic heritage, Oxford is a beautiful city where Gothic spires intermingle with medieval colleges. Comprising England’s oldest university, most of the 38 unique colleges are sadly only viewable from the outside. Two visitable ones are Magdalen College, considered one of the most beautiful, and Christchurch College whose quadrangle was used in the 1st Harry Potter film. Its cathedral choir also sings evensong.

Other notable colleges are Balliol and Merton, the 2 oldest, while Hertford College has the Bridge of Sighs. Next door is the cavernous Bodleian Library, overlooking the round Radcliffe Camera, the city’s best-known landmark.

The university also has a botanical garden and the best Oxford museums, including the Ashmolean Museum and Natural History Museum, where swifts nest in summer.

Unsurprisingly for a student town, it has lots of bars and restaurants. Oxford shopping is also good and includes England’s oldest covered market, brightly coloured High Street shops, and the Clarendon and Westgate shopping centres.

Whether you arrive by road or fly into London Oxford Airport, don’t leave without trying Oxford punting. In contrast to rival Cambridge, you punt here by standing in the front (rather than on the back). Easily accessed from the Oxford accommodation on Booking.com, the routes take in the River Cherwell and the Isis (the name for this part of the Thames).

The mythical city: go through the looking glass with Alice in Wonderland. Oxford is this wonderland. Dive into the heart of magic with Harry Potter. Finally, Oxford is above all a multitude of universities where there is always something to discover in its universities, its chapels, its places of worship: candlelight concerts, performances, theaters, talks, libraries, etc. It also has many parks, the Thames canals, etc. In short, Oxford, a cosmopolitan city for its students, its researchers, but it is also a city which breathes knowledge, history and magic...

The quintessential English city.

The quintessential English city. Perfect for those who love to wander around and admire the buildings from many different time periods but also have access to great shops and local restaurants! Both museums in town are excellent, but would highly recommend the Pitt Rivers museum. Its collection always makes me realize how similar humans are regardless of where in the world we live.

Just Oxford being Oxford.

Just Oxford being Oxford. Lovely place to visit been there many times. The walks, university or around the city are lovely. Botanic gardens a must visit. If new to Oxford take the tour bus to get a feel for the city. Lovely parks and walks along the river. Great eating and night life. Use park and ride frequent and lovely drivers. The covered market is not as varied as it used to be mostly eateries now, but there a loads of lovely restaurants. It is due to b refurbished soon so may not be open for a while, but if it is go there.

I have visited Oxford many times due to family in the area.

I have visited Oxford many times due to family in the area. I would suggest visiting for a long weekend. Harry Potter fans can visit locations from the films, literature fans can visit the halls some of their favourite authors attended. Shopping, eating out/drinks are all within easy reach of this location.

we did not go into Oxford as we were further out than expected and had other plans for Saturday which going into Oxford from where we were would have been disrupted. I have been to Oxford a number of times and have always enjoyed it, this visit was a little addition to plans we already had. We ate locally in Summertown where there was a great choice of restaurants and eating establishments

What a fascinating, historical town!

What a fascinating, historical town! There is so much to see and so much to learn about its history. Our guided tour of the colleges of the university was invaluable to our understanding of Oxford’s past and present importance.

Lovely hotel, although apparently it was rebuilt in the 19th Century, internally the pub area and our room at the top retains a lot of olde world country pub character, perhaps betraying the building's 16th century origins (but in a good way). Food was very good, the staff are exceptional, somewhat cheaper than staying in the city centre hotels and for me, more enjoyable. About 15 mins into Oxford outside rush hour. Plenty of parking at the hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

Hotel was perfect location for our dinner at Somerville College and for all the sites of Oxford 12 min walk to city centre & hotel has parking. Staff were very obliging & the room super comfortable & thoughtfully resourced with for example fresh milk. Food is good enough and certainly well cooked and tasty.

A fantastic price and beautiful location for North Oxford. Can walk into the city centre, also many buses. Summertown has lots of nice places to eat and get drinks. Hotel is clean, quiet and perfect quality for the price. Staff are exceedingly friendly and helpful, especially Elena, Leen and Bruce.
