FAQs about hotels in Oxford

City of Dreaming Spires

Featuring a magnificent academic heritage, Oxford is a beautiful city where Gothic spires intermingle with medieval colleges. The home to England’s oldest university, most of the 38 unique colleges are sadly only viewable from the outside. Two that you can visit are Magdalen College, considered one of the most beautiful, and Christchurch College whose quadrangle was used in the 1st Harry Potter film. Its cathedral choir also sings evensong.

Other notable colleges are Balliol and Merton, the 2 oldest, while Hertford College has the Bridge of Sighs. Next door is the cavernous Bodleian Library, overlooking the round Radcliffe Camera, the city’s best-known landmark.

The university also has a botanical garden and the best Oxford museums, including the Ashmolean Museum and Natural History Museum, where swifts nest in summer.

Unsurprisingly for a student town, it has lots of bars and restaurants. Oxford shopping is also good and includes England’s oldest covered market, brightly colored High Street shops, and the Clarendon and Westgate shopping centers.

Whether you arrive by road or fly into London Oxford Airport, don’t leave without trying Oxford punting. In contrast to rival Cambridge, you punt here by standing in the front (rather than on the back). Easily accessed from the Oxford accommodations on Booking.com, the routes take in the River Cherwell and the Isis (the name for this part of the Thames).

The historic centre of Oxford is easily navigable on foot,...

The historic centre of Oxford is easily navigable on foot, or there are frequent (every 15 minutes) buses to and from all parts. Nearly every shop offers free pamphlets and maps of the city, so it is not difficult to find one's way around. Bear in mind, though, that none of the museums, exhibitions, etc seem to open before 10am, so early risers will have a long wait! Entry to nearly all venues is free, and most include cafes and or restaurants serving high-quality food and drink (some of which, eg the roof-top restaurant at the Ashmolean, need to be booked ahead of any visit). Visitors to the city need to remember that it is a 'working' university town, not a theme park, so there are hundreds of students rushing to and from lectures, on foot and on bikes. Even in the pedestrianised sections, there are electric buses and cyclists, so care is needed to remain alert and avoid the middle of the road! All in all, though, a wonderful experience.

A lovely city. A day or two is fine. The Cotswolds tour is a must. There are great pubs to dine and have a drink. The hop on hop off was helpfull. We also used taxis to and from the station, which was very close.

The superb college buildings, open spaces, river (we enjoyed a 90 minute river cruise), eating facilities (especially ‘Chutneys’ Indian restaurant) and the lively atmosphere all contributed to a wonderful short break. Everything was in comfortable walking distance, but there are a constant stream of buses and it is easy to get around the main attractions via this means if you wish. If we had a minor criticism, there is a lack of litter bins and strategically placed benches - and watch out for cyclists as there are very many and you need to be vigilant when stepping off pavements!

The city is so full of tourists in and out of term its difficult to get a flavour of the place, save for having some connection with a college and services in their chapels (my preferences, by order: Exeter; Magdalen; Merton; and Christ Church).

Comfortable hotel in a quiet location on the edge of Oxford. Easy walk into the city centre takes about 25 mins on £2 on the bus. Our room was clean and quiet with plenty of hot water and a coffee maker. We didn't have time to use the restaurant or bar but the common areas looked good. Staff were friendly and helpful -- especially Claudia who seemed to be working all weekend but carried on smiling!
