With several heritage railways in close proximity and access by train, Porthmadog should be a must on any Train enthusiast ‘List of places to go’. My son has been talking about the FFestiniog railway (Rheilffyrdd FFestiniog ac Eryri) for many years. We were finally able to make the trek and we were excited to see it all. We could have spent 3-4 days going on the different excursions. Plan on getting into the Boston Lodge railway works for a tour there also.

    Good base for the area.

Good base for the area. Both FFestiniog and Welsh Highland narrow gauge railways stop in the town. Portmeiron 5 min drive. Harlech just a bit further. Easy to go sightsee Keith Brymer Jones (Pottery Throwdown) chapel conversion nearby, as on TV series

I loved exploring the interesting and quirky areas of the village and investigating its history. A very thought provoking place to visit! The accommodation added to this and so did the kindness of all of the staff, who were very helpful as I had never visited Portmerion before.

    A charming place to visit.

A charming place to visit. The views, scenery, local people, heritage railways, harbour, easy transport access and access to amenities, shops, restaurants and shops, walks along the cob, with views of Snowdon. The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, has an excellent museum and local staff have an excellent knowledge of the history of the area, the slate mining and heritage railways. Great for families. The scenery along the routes on the Welsh Highland Railway is spectacular. (This is separate to the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway). Suitable for families. The views along the cob, estuary and harbour are scenic and the views of Snowdon and surrounding region are very scenic. Portmeirion and the David Lloyd George Museum and his childhood home are easy to reach by car or public transport. There is a harbour museum and a number of other attractions within the region. The food at Marina La Cucina was freshly cooked and very good food. The restaurants get busy during the height of season, so we would recommend booking earlier in the day for a table.

Loved the area. The hotel and facilities and grounds are kept really well. The restaurant is great , and the food is gorgeous. The staff are amazing. Nothing was too much trouble. Very helpful, friendly and courteous. Stayed on the sight for a few days with family for husband and family to do the climb up to the top of Snowdon. Near zip wire, so they did that, too. Lovely waterfall. Last day and night, my husband and I stayed in a cabana, which was absolutely gorgeous. Wish I had booked more days in the Cabana. Highly recommend.
