FAQs about hotels in Southampton

Historic Port of Walls

Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.

There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.

Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.

There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.

If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.

The sole purpose of my visit was to share in my daughters 60th birthday party. She and her children live in Totton and Southamption and l live near Truro in Cornwall. So all in all l did not have much time to weigh up the pros and cons of you special Hotel. The one thing that I found hard to come to terms with is the fact that l, being a bit short and elderly, found it impossible to get into the high beds in the room and ended up sleeping in the chair. Not good for a 4.star hotel. Other than that l enjoyed the hotel. .

Southampton was just right for me to stay for 2 summer months. The weather was perfect during summer. It was never too hot. People are also nice and helpful. There is not much to see except for the Bargate and the Old town; however, the city is well enough for families to stay for short or long term with adequate facilities, shopping malls, parks, etc.

I was in town for work rather than leisure, but was able to see the cultural quarter and its environs, though I was sorry not to get to the old town. Unfortunately the city centre seems to have been blighted by the construction of many wide roads, probably in the 1950s, so it doesn't feel very pedestrian-friendly except in a few core areas. The area between the central station and the Westquay shopping complex felt rather run-down and uninviting, but the parks on the other side of the Guildhall Square were pleasant and well maintained. The SeaCity Museum and the art gallery were both enjoyable, and there was a range of cafes and restaurants from which I was able to pick several that suited my taste. Public transport links by train and bus seemed good (plenty of buses in the daytime, though I never found a comprehensive route map), and I've used the nice small airport in the past. All in all I'm not sure I'd pick Southampton as a holiday destination but I'm happy with it as a hub for work or travel.

Southampton had good shopping, the cruise ports and a some decent sites. The seafood restaurant at VoCo hotel was excellent with great service and a modern clean look. The food selections were perfect and priced reasonably depending on your selection. The staff were very accommodating and attentive. The harbour area was walkable and enjoyable. The shopping mall and city center were convenient to our hotel near the harbor.

I liked the park that was near where I had a cooked breakfast. The shopping centre was very good. I also did a walk showing the history of Southampton. I was unaware you can get a ferry to the Isle of Wight which would be fun. I did not have time for anything else.

The room was very clean and well put together, and we appreciated the complementary drinks. The location of the hotel, while an approximately 25 minute walk from the train station, was close to the best parts of Southampton. Breakfast was top notch. We stayed in around 8 hotels in this England trip, and this one had one of the best menus for breakfast.

Lots of parking on site is great. The hotel was clean. All staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was great with lots of choice. It was in a great location for our visit being the Mayflower theatre and Southampton summer sessions at the guildhall.
