Whitby is a gem.
Whitby is a gem. There are lots of independent shops for food, gifts, local products and clothing. It’s friendly and quieter in the week but buzzing at the weekend. You can sit and have a coffee/drink and watch harbour life just happen. There are 4 excellent museums: Captain Cook, RNLI, Whitby history and Whitby Abbey. Stunning views all round. Steeped in history. Trenchers seafood restaurant is excellent for food and service. I loved the old town, cobbled narrow streets, the 199 steps up to the Abby and leading to Whitby Brewery. The views from the top of the steps were absolutely beautiful. Lots of quirky characterful shops, great little pubs with wide selection of drinks and some wonderful restaurants serving amazingly delicious food. Busy town at the weekend.
Busy town at the weekend. Got quieter during the week (early October). Lovely beach, dog friendly between October and end of May which was perfect for us. Our dogs had a fantastic time! Whitby is famous for its connection to Dracula, the story being that Bram Stoker was inspired by seeing a coffin being taken up the 199 stairs to St Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey. It is a lovely town with many small shops on both sides of the harbour. St Mary's is a beautiful and very unusual church and the abbey is also spectacular. There are shops on both sides of the harbour and many cafes and restaurants. Further afield is Robin Hood's bay which is a quaint and very pretty village. Great place for coastal walks and trying local beers. Plenty of history regarding Captain Cook, and the Dracula legend. The beach looks like it would be great in summer, we visited off season so all we did was walk along it. It looks like there would be plenty of sightseeing trips by boat, and fishing trips, available in summer. There is a great variety of restaurants, pubs, and smaller hotels, which should cater for most tastes. The emphasis is on fish dishes, and local beers and gins. Whitby is a lovely place to visit with lovely old streets and shops to explore, lovely harbour and great views from the abbey. Everybody was so friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Special mention to Karl who was excellent in the bar. Excellent location for travelling between Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay with the bus stop opposite of the hotel. Had a lovely.meal in the hotel bar on our second night....food was lovely and great value for money. Breakfast was great, with a mix of continental and cooked breakfast options. The majority of our stays have been at The Royal. It's central for everywhere ! Rooms are clean and comfortable, we paid extra for a sea-view and weren't disappointed. Spare pillows in the wardrobe, which we found useful. Breakfast is plentiful and varied, and being buffet style, you can go back for more. Separate entrance for hotel guests and key fob access into the bar and restaurant. Whitby can be pricey for accommodation, but the Angel was £80 for 1 night room only, which was quite reasonable.
