FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

York Minster tour was more expensive than we had anticipated...

York Minster tour was more expensive than we had anticipated but it turned out to be really worthwhile. Loved the Shambles but surprised that most of it shut down by 5-6 pm. The Viking Museum was really very interesting and informative. It was my kind of museum with people to explain aspects and a short ride around the exhibition. Great!

    An outstanding city!

An outstanding city! I cannot understand why we have never visited before, there is so much to see and do. We highly recommend a visit to the “York Dungeon “, it is a phenomenal experience and “the cast” are unbelievable. The Shambles is a magnificent street, so much so, we went three times. Plenty of excellent eateries. The Giggling Squid being our favourite, but the York Food Festival was on, with a Miriam of foods from different cultures and really good live music.

The food and drinks festival was on so plenty to do.

The food and drinks festival was on so plenty to do. Lots of stalls. Always plenty to explore when in York. The Old York Tea house was worth a visit, so was the trembling madness, up stairs in the shop they have a pub worth seeing and the food looked good. We had an evening meal at Bill's who do a 2 course set menu for around £18.

So much to see and learn in York. If you love learning about history, York will not Disappoint. we did the jorvik viking centre and it was fabulous. Cliffton Tower was worth the visit, Great views from the top for all the photo lovers. we got rained out on one day, so we didn't get to do everything we wanted. Hope to make it back one day.

York is a beautiful historic city.

York is a beautiful historic city. We timed our trip right just after the summer holidays and before half term and the winter season begins as on this visit we could walk around more comfortably still lots of people but not mass crowds of tourists meant this trip a lot more chilled and relaxed.

    York is a marvel.

York is a marvel. It has so many buildings dating from the 16th, i7th, 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. It is quite walkable and pedestrian friendly. York Minster is a must-see. The people were courteous and friendly.

I have used hotels extensively over the years and have never stayed at a hotel more welcoming and friendly than Wheatlands Lodge, the staff were completely focused on making our stay a pleasant one, Breakfast was served in the warm, spacious restaurant, the full English breakfast was a well cooked, well presented treat! Great location, the historic Roman walls and York city centre are as short walk away. Parking was available at the hotel, on street parking is also available close by.

Friends had recommended The Churchill to us, so we booked a two night midweek stay in February. The hotel is within easy walking distance of York city centre and has car parking available. All the staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Our room was very comfortable and equipped with everything we needed for our stay. We ate breakfast and dinner in the hotel restaurant on both days and the food was excellent.
