The old town and the Venetian port area has a nice vibe with lots of eateries, bars and many shops. Boat trips a few museums and lots of shady squares to take a rest. Chania is a lovely city--especially the old town around the harbor. We managed to find a parking place for our car in Talos Square each day for the two weeks we had the car. We stayed in Old Town which is an older part of Chania but is within walking distance of of the port, shopping and restaurants. We took private tours to the White Mountains and to Sougia (the most southern part of Crete), which I recommend, to see ancient Greek ruins and Roman tombs. Also we took a walking tour around Old Town to become familiar with the surrounding local favorites. We visited a local farmer's market for cheese, fruit and olives. When we weren't swimming or sunbathing, we spent most of our time in Chania Old Town and the Venetian Port. It does get very busy, but there are lots of gift shops and tavernas to explore. Dont miss the Domenico ice cream shop - amazing flavours, and very entertaining to watch how it's made. Further into the city, you'll find a broader range of shops and small cafes offering tempting Cretan snacks and pastries.
