Rhodes has the most extensive historic walls and historic buildings in phenomenal shape that I have ever seen in Europe. It is simply stunning. That said, in season, Cruise ships disgorge thousands upon thousands of passengers each day and even in October- when we went - it was packed. I think it would be hell in July and August. The historic little streets were full of shops, cafes and restaurants, but you could still get a sense of what the town was like centuries ago. Definitely worth a visit, as was Lindos for which we hired a car for only £40 for the day. Rhodes town is a fascinating place. It is easy and safe to walk round at night and there is a good choice of restaurants. It does get crowded during the day however. Lots of history here. Best to visit sites/museums early or in the evening - warm evening air and fragrant breezes (we were there in late September and it was still hot in the day). Friendly and affordable, especially off the main tourist places/routes. Excellent food if you look around too. Everyone friendly and all spoke excellent English. Rhodes old town is absolutely beautiful an absolute must visit. But it's incredibly busy during the day loads of cruise ships .
