Rhodes has the most extensive historic walls and historic buildings in phenomenal shape that I have ever seen in Europe. It is simply stunning. That said, in season, Cruise ships disgorge thousands upon thousands of passengers each day and even in October- when we went - it was packed. I think it would be hell in July and August. The historic little streets were full of shops, cafes and restaurants, but you could still get a sense of what the town was like centuries ago. Definitely worth a visit, as was Lindos for which we hired a car for only £40 for the day. The staff were very nice, and the location is excellent — right next to the bus stop from the airport and with easy access to other tourist destinations. It's just a 1-minute walk from a lovely beach, and the area is calm and peaceful. The room was new, had air conditioning, and the beds were comfortable.
