The Sunny Side of Croatia
Stunning Split stands proudly on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, and due to its great climate is called the Mediterranean Flower. It features eclectic architecture, spectacular views and delicious cuisine.
Split is centered around the ancient Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian, a magnificent building constructed at the beginning of the 4th century AD and featuring limestone and marble towers, columns and courtyards. It lies in a bay decorated with white sails of yachts, as sailing is definitely Split’s big thing!
The city is full of architectural gems, one of which is St. Duje’s Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in the world, built in 305 AD and combining both Roman and Catholic influences. Nearby Varoš is a must-see, one of the city’s oldest parts, full of charming streets and beautiful houses.
Make sure you visit the Bačvice Beach and the Riva promenade, popular with locals and full of cafés and palm trees. While on the hunt for local specialities, try soparnik - wood fired dough filled with vegetables - or local soft drinks Pipi and Orela.

Loved Split. The old town is beautiful and clean and the waterfront is gorgeous. The local people are friendly and helpful. The food is excellent. We did a walking tour and and boat trip. We ended a cruise in Split. It's definitely worth seeing. Book a walking tour and a golf cart tour... you'll see totally different things. Two days exploring town is plenty, but it would have been fun to take a couple of excursions to other island attractions that our cruise didn't cover. We were there the first week of October, so it was sunny during the day and chilly in the evening, very nice. Also much less crowded (though still bustling) than in the summer months. I can't say that we had a great meal, other than pizza at Bokamorra, which had a nice vibe and some of the best pizza ever (get the truffle and mushroom). Stay at the Hotel Ambasador for a luxury experience and spectacular views of the entire city and harbor. Friends stayed at one of the hotels in the palace and, while quaint, it was more like a place we'd have stayed at in our college years. We travelled beginning of October, one day stay over at the start before a boat trip and then again for one day after a week. Weather was cool-ish at night. Many restaurants and shops within the old town, no need to venture far away. Food and wine prices were higher than expected, exceeding that of most cities in Italy, which is the last European country we have visited in the past year. Clothing was not expensive, though. It's a pleasant city with a fairly calm population: no one yells in the streets (like in Spain, for example...). Unfortunately, the streets and the city beach are dirty, with lots of trash. There's a new beach with a clean shore, a large area for relaxation/sports, and cafes and restaurants, called Znjanski. You can get there by bus number 8 or by taxi (10-15 minutes). Tickets can also be bought from the driver. Tip: for day trips to neighboring islands, take the boats that leave from the main port. It's very convenient and inexpensive! We loved Split, the town was extremely interesting and beautiful with lots of great restaurants, bars and quirky shops. We booked a walking tour which is a must I think, very informative and interesting. There were two/three beaches within walking distance. We did a trip to the Krka National Park and followed the waterfall trail, would thoroughly recommend it.
