Great base for visiting other villages along the coast. Pretty town with plenty of small shops for gifts and ceramics. Wide range of restaurants, busy ones on the central square and secluded ones up steps and in alleys - all full of character. Limited suppplies for apartment cooking so we had to eat out for all meals but prices the same as UK. La Perla restaurant made excellent gluten free pizza! The accommodation and ability to access great day trips (Pompeii, walking the path of the Gods, visit other towns along the coast, cookery course etc) was brilliant and made for a great holiday. We did find that the whole coast was packed with tourists and when the cruise ships came in, this was much worse. The steps everywhere were a challenge. The biggest disappointment was the huge amount of tourists. It was like visiting a festival or Disneyland. There were a couple restaurants that were quite good. My adult daughter enjoyed her hikes; one in Amalfi behind cemetery & other in Altara(?). I'm sure it's easy to get around without the maddening crowd; but it was a turnoff upon arrival to face this, so unexpected. I was there to try and find some information on descendants, but man in office wouldn't help me, kept saying "no capice," and shooed me out of there.Guest review byPLW - 8.0

Amalfi is a small and charming town with beautiful architecture and a lovely atmosphere. However, since it’s the central town of the entire Amalfi Coast, it tends to get very crowded — which unfortunately takes away some of its charm. That said, it’s still worth a visit, especially to admire its history and beauty. But I highly recommend exploring the nearby towns as well — like Positano, Atrani, Maiori, Minori, and others — each of them has its own unique character and is often much more peaceful and authentic.Guest review byLiza ManijaLatvia - 10.0

Amalfi is in a beautiful setting and has a long history. Lots of steps! The people were the friendliest we met on our two weeks in Italy. Get the lemon ice cream. Hike up to the Valle delle Ferriere. Ride the public buses. The roads are a thrill!Guest review byAnonymous

Location was right in the middle of things, not quiet, but easy to get to port, bus station and shops. Would definitely recommend this for a stay in Amalfi and as a starting point for Amalfi coast attractions.
