FAQs about hotels in Genova

Ship Shape and Fancy Free

Hugging the Ligurian coastline, Genoa boasts Europe’s largest old town and Italy’s largest seaport. As birthplace of Christopher Columbus, its heart and soul is the port, site of the Naval Museum and the ship-shaped Aquarium.

By the old port (Porto Antico) are several bars and restaurants serving the local speciality – pesto. Other Genoese favourites are focaccia and fresh fish from its Mediterranean shores. Don’t miss the homemade gelato ice cream along the seafront promenade – Corso Italia. East of here is the tranquil Boccadasse neighbourhood, where colourful boats bob up and down.

The best city views are from Villetta di Negro, a raised, shady park with a waterfall. Below is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Via Garibaldi, home to the ornately decorated Palazzo dei Rolli.

South is the old town with its black-and-white cathedral and Piazza de Ferrari, featuring a large fountain and historic buildings including the Doge’s Palace. The surrounding area is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets flying the Genoa flag, supposedly where the English took theirs from. Each features bars, restaurants and unique shops, while fancy boutiques are on Via XX Settembre.

As you approach Genova Airport look out for the fortresses on the lush hills forming the backbone of the ‘Superb City’. Booking.com has a range of Genoa accommodation, from hotels to apartments and B&Bs.

Genoa is a fascinating city, almost entirely overlooked by...

Genoa is a fascinating city, almost entirely overlooked by tourists (apart from the thousands delivered by the giant cruise liners). Between the 15th and 18th centuries it became fabulously wealthy from international trade and banking as a maritime power. That wealth is displayed in dozens of extraordinary palaces, which together are grouped as a UNESCO World Heritage asset focused on the Via Garibaldi. The Palazzo Reale is a must-see. The wealthy sought to save their souls by endowing an array of wonderful Baroque churches, amongst which the Santissima Annunziata stands out as a truly remarkable example - another must see. Off the main streets the medieval plan survives in the form of a maze of tiny alleys only a few feet wide: fine to explore by day but avoid after dark. Today's Genoa is a bustling modern city with excellent shopping, including a tremendous range of smaller independent stores. Like all sea ports there is a gritty underside under the glamour, which in common with Naples, is all part of the essence of the place.

Refreshingly free from over-tourism with only the Via Garibaldi palaces getting really busy. In most cities you may never be more than 20 feet from a rat; in Genoa you're never more than 20 feet from a coffee shop. With cakes, Focaccia and Farinata. And the number of restaurants isn't far behind, most with quality at very reasonable prices. The narrow lanes of the huge old town are daunting at first, but you soon get used to navigating by landmarks above you.

Genoa: the old city where getting lost is half the fun… and the other half is falling in love with the alleys and focaccia 🍞❤️. Bocadasse: a tiny fishing village with postcard vibes – perfect for photos and chilling 🐟📸. Portofino: small, pricey, and fabulous – every boat and building seems to whisper, “feel like a VIP” ⛵✨. https://www.instagram.com/mariamanuelagheorghe/

The renaissance palaces on Via Garibaldi are fantastically interesting. The area around the Cathedral with much earlier medieval buildings is beautiful as is the cathedral. A boat trip along the coast is well worth doing. Swim at Portofino cove.= accessed up steps from main harbour and walk 100m along the road to the right. Find a hole in the wall and walk down the steps.

An absolutely fascinating city with a wealth of history and beautiful old buildings which somehow have managed to survive in a tangle of narrow streets and small squares. When you are bored with the city...very hard to be...then take the cheap, efficient train down the coast to Sestre Levante where most stops have a great beach to swim from.

Genoa is a big port city with many grand buildings, it's very interesting. We walked along the old port and saw all the mega yachts! We walked to the centre, past the cathedral and down Via Garibaldi - amazing buildings. There are lots of lovely restaurants and shops. It is also a big port and has some dark alleyways! Getting around is easy by metro or taxi

I loved that the hotel is on the beach, literally, there is about a 20m distance from the wall to the water, absolutely smashing, I snorkeled for hours, the rocks behind the hotel are full of fish and there are quite a few species. I liked the feel of the hotel, it looks great inside, the staff were great and happy to help. Thank you !

Italy is always a hard place to find a good central nice comfortable hotel, you get rubbish cheap hotels then really expensive high end hotels, finding what most of us want, a good hotel at a good price is the Holy Grail, I've been to Rome 5 times and still not found my forever hotel, I've nailed my Genoa hotel first visit

I asked a woman in the reception for a toothbrush and she didn’t have one by the counter so she literally ran up the stairs to their cleaning tools cabinet and got me one and brought it to my room. That is what i call service. Not so common during my earlier stay in other hotels in Italy, so big shoutout to you

Actually I didn’t stay in the Hotel Continental but I was upgraded to Grand Hotel Savoia the one next door, so the review is for the Savoia. It’s in a great location with good amenities in the room. It was especially nice to have a bath, as many hotels nowadays only provide a shower.
