FAQs about hotels in Genoa

Ship Shape and Fancy Free

Right on the Ligurian coast, Genoa features Europe’s largest historic quarter and Italy’s largest seaport. As the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, its heart and soul is the port, site of the Naval Museum and the ship-shaped Aquarium.

By the old port (Porto Antico), there are several bars and restaurants serving the local specialty, pesto. Other Genoese favorites are focaccia and fresh fish from its Mediterranean shores. Don’t miss the homemade gelato ice cream along the seafront promenade, Corso Italia. East of here is the tranquil Boccadasse neighborhood, where colorful boats bob up and down.

The best city views are from Villetta di Negro, a raised, shady park with a waterfall. Below is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Via Garibaldi, home to the ornately decorated Palazzo dei Rolli.

South is the historic quarter with its black-and-white cathedral and Piazza de Ferrari, featuring a large fountain and historic buildings including the Doge’s Palace. The surrounding area is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets flying the Genoa flag, supposedly where the English took theirs from. Each features bars, restaurants and unique shops, while fancy boutiques are on Via XX Settembre.

As you approach Genova Airport, look out for the fortresses on the lush hills forming the backbone of the "Superb City." Booking.com has a range of Genoa accommodations, from hotels to apartments and B&Bs.

Genoa is a big port city with many grand buildings, it's very interesting. We walked along the old port and saw all the mega yachts! We walked to the centre, past the cathedral and down Via Garibaldi - amazing buildings. There are lots of lovely restaurants and shops. It is also a big port and has some dark alleyways! Getting around is easy by metro or taxi

Genova captured my interest from the moment I stepped off the train. A mix of fascinating old town alleys, passages, and staircases, with palaces, arcades, museums, boats of every sort, castle walls, hiking trails, and excellent restaurants and food. Tiles, gargoyles, fountains, old mills, an aquarium... it's just remarkable!

Took a trip to Camogli, San Fruttousso and Portofino with Get your guide and that was excellent. Walked through town to the cathedral and Christopher Columbus' house. The town itself has different things going on. Took a bus to the Staglieno cemetery, the statues are amazing and it is overwhelming.

It was very difficult to find reliable information about places to visit while we stayed in Genoa!! We went to the Tourist Information office on our first day, and there didn't seem to be many of the usual leaflets or posters around. We did ask for information about the Hop-On-Hop-Off tourist bus, and the staff had a leaflet behind the counter, like it was some kind of secret. So it felt like you had to know what you wanted to do or where you wanted to visit in order to ask for it, which is kind of the opposite of what a Tourist Info office should be. The staff also didn't seem to know about one of the main Palazzos being closed for the rest of the month, so were giving people information about its opening times even though that information was wrong. Even the posters/info with QR codes on them mostly led to websites that were out of date or had very little useful information on them. We left Genoa very weary and disappointed after staying for 4 nights, having walked to many places that turned out to be closed. There MUST be a ton of interesting things to do in Genoa, and we did find some of them for ourselves (by basically researching on Google Maps and TripAdvisor etc), but wow, it felt like quite a chore. Good stuff: the wacky public transport options (elevators, funicular railways, rack railway, train/lift on Via Balbi that goes up to the Castello D'Albertis (which is also worth a visit); the food; the things that are actually open (as long as you can find out their secret opening times).

I think i could have stayed longer -- mainly stayed around the old part of town and didn't gate to the other parts. Genova is handy to get to the smaller coves up the coast. maybe next time i will spend more time

We got great room with balcony looking at the main street. Hotel has perfect location, you can reach most of the city attractions by foot. Hygiene was very satisfying, all staff was extremely polite and professional. Breakfast is delicious, and they are also serving excellent coffee.

Grand Hotel Savoia is a vintage 19th century luxury hotel. No more, no less. It is not modern. It is not flawless. It is exactly what it is - a shining remnant of Genova's glorious past. And it feels wonderful. Enjoy!

The hotel is good enough for its price. Very central location and we even had a good city view. The breakfast we cancelled because it is really looked poor. But that is normal for Italy.
