Gateway to the 'Cinque Terre'
La Spezia is one of those typical cities of the Liguria Region where colourful houses cover hills and cliffs, providing panoramic views over the sea. Thousands of years of history and a heart open towards the sea have shaped the character of this town surrounded by the 'Cinque Terre'.
Located on the coast of the namesake gulf, its proximity to Genoa has greatly influenced its development and culture. Take a walk uphill from the harbour, and admire the display of architectonic styles in the Old Town. Must-see sites in the city are the 13th-century Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St George’s Castle. We used La Spezia as a place to visit Cinque Terre region. We were somewhat disappointed in Cinque Terre. It is overcrowded and somewhat dilapidated. The buildings could be refreshed with a coat of paint. The best way to see the region is to take the train to Vernazza, then take a 2-hour boat trip to view the five villages. La Spezia is a great town-lots of great shops, restaurants and bars for aperitivo. Very walkable and people very friendly. Perfect jumping point for access to Cinque Terre. Actually we visited Cinque Terre so that we didn't have much time to enjoy La Spezia and Porto Venere. You can find mercato, supermarkets, parks, little train for sightseeing and so on. It is more practical to stay in La Spezia especially if you have luggages to drag along - in CInque Terre, stairs, narrow steps and steep slopes are really challenging to do with baggage. There are wider range of options of food in La Spezia, and considerably cheaper than the ones in Cinque Terre. It’s a well loved hotel, definitely on the older side but it provides everything you could need. More importantly, the staff are some of the best people I have ever encountered and I’ve travelled a lot!
