FAQs about hotels in Syracuse

The Very Best of Greece and Rome

A goldmine of Greek and Roman heritage, Siracusa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Necropolis of Pantalica in hills to the north-west.

Siracusa itself has a necropolis within the amazing Neapolis archaeological park, which also houses Roman amphitheatre and altar remains, as well as one of the largest Greek theatres ever built. Legend has it that the site includes the tomb of Archimedes, who was born here.

The ancient Greeks founded the city (also known as Syracuse) and Cicero even considered it the greatest of all. Columns from that period were used to build the Baroque cathedral, and the Fountain of Arethusa dates to the same era. Both are within Ortygia, a walled peninsula jutting into the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. Also here are ruins of the Roman temple of Apollo, and at the tip of the peninsula is the 13th-century Maniace Castle.

The fabulous Siracusa Archaeological Museum houses relics from all these periods, and is located by the Catacombs of Saint John. Opposite them both is the modern conical spire of the Madonna delle Lacrime Sanctuary church.

Aside from all this history, Siracusa also has plenty of pavement cafes and restaurants, and lovely sandy beaches overlooked by luxury hotels, cheap B&Bs and holiday homes available on Booking.com.

Ortega is a hive of activity and tries to meet all needs. The boat trips are thoroughly recommended and good value for money. A wide range of restaurants all at reasonable prices. The Greek theatre in Syracuse is worth a visit and other sites are well advertised and fairly priced.

Syracuse is a lovely place with lots of fab restaurants, museums and art galleries. I especially enjoyed the museum of Illusions. Great fun and the girls working were wonderful. My negative about the place would be the litter, really needs attention.

We stayed in Ortygia, the Old Town part of Syracuse, whcih was a very interesting place, with narrow streets and old buildings. The market was great. We also went to the medieval Jewish ritual baths, the only surviving one in Europe, because it was blocked up during the Spanish Inquisition and only rediscovered in the 1960s. The Archimedes and Da Vinci Museum was amazing - found out a lot more of their discoveries and inventions. And the Archaeological Park was wonderful - needed a couple of hours to go around. Have to catch a taxi to get there - best to go later in the day if it is a hot day.

A fascinating historical city with a great deal to see and learn, plus great food and a lively buzz in the evenings. The beaches are small and stony but great for swimming and we found the local people friendly and welcoming.

Syracuse is packed with ancient Greek history and mythology.

Syracuse is packed with ancient Greek history and mythology. The island of Ortygia needs a full day on its own. The Archaeology museum is excellent, informative (and not dumbed down like so many these days) and the Greek theatre in the archaeological park is magnificent. With a car you get to Noto which is a baroque jewel, or with a longer drive (2-3 hrs) you can reach the best Roman mosaics in the world at Piazza Armerina or the temples at Agrigento. By the way eating on Ortygia is a bit of a tourist experience: hard to avoid tiresome musicians who spoil your conversation for half an hour and then expect a tip.

The island and old town of Ortigia is brilliant, historic, charming and a must visit. Syracuse is built-up, industrialised, and busy so we stayed in Ortigia and only used Syracuse for the bus service to Noto. The one hour bus trip to Noto was an enjoyable change of scenery and a pleasant day trip.

The property owner was there to meet us when we arrived; very kind and helpful. The apartment is nice and very clean. It is set in the central area of Siracusa, less than 20 seconds walk from one of the charming narrow streets of the ancient city. Shops, restaurants, bars, and museums are all over the place, The apartment is also a few minutes walk from the promenade which is down the road from the apartment. All considered the lodging is perfect for a family stay in one of Sicily's beautiful cities.

Alberto is an amazing host one that you can only wish for in your dreams. He greeted us, showed us around in his charming B&B but moreover gave us invaluable recommendations about what to visit and where to eat in Ortigia. Thanks to him our stay in Syracuse/ Oritigia was one of the best city visits in all over Sicily with unforgettable memories. The room is wonderful and the breakfast served on the terrace is just simply awesome!

The hotel is exceptional. The staff were the most attentive of any hotel in which I have stayed. The rooms were cleaned on a daily basis. The hotel surroundings - pool, gardens were perfect. The breakfast was of a very high standard as pointed out by several other reviewers. Although slightly over-priced when compared to restaurants throughout the rest of Sicily, the standard of food served in the restaurant was also very good.

We had a ground floor apartment. It has very nice decoration and well equipped kitchen. The location is fantastic. Less than in a minute you can reach a seashore. It was very convenient to ramble around Ortigia and at the same time to get to the railway station and explore other Sicily Baroque cities. Welcome from Georgio was very warm.

This was our last stay after 2 weeks in sicily. My only regret is that we left it for last. The staff was extremely helpful, the room spotless and the location perfect. We didn't experience this level of comfort even in 5 star hotels.
