The Very Best of Greece and Rome
A goldmine of Greek and Roman heritage, Siracusa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Necropolis of Pantalica in hills to the north-west.
Siracusa itself has a necropolis within the amazing Neapolis archaeological park, which also houses Roman amphitheatre and altar remains, as well as one of the largest Greek theatres ever built. Legend has it that the site includes the tomb of Archimedes, who was born here.
The ancient Greeks founded the city (also known as Syracuse) and Cicero even considered it the greatest of all. Columns from that period were used to build the Baroque cathedral, and the Fountain of Arethusa dates to the same era. Both are within Ortygia, a walled peninsula jutting into the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. Also here are ruins of the Roman temple of Apollo, and at the tip of the peninsula is the 13th-century Maniace Castle.
The fabulous Siracusa Archaeological Museum houses relics from all these periods, and is located by the Catacombs of Saint John. Opposite them both is the modern conical spire of the Madonna delle Lacrime Sanctuary church.
Aside from all this history, Siracusa also has plenty of pavement cafes and restaurants, and lovely sandy beaches overlooked by luxury hotels, cheap B&Bs and holiday homes available on Booking.com.

Siracusa is an interesting and varied city.
Siracusa is an interesting and varied city. Historically and culturally there are lots to see and explore particularly in the old town area of Ortigia but also at the archaeological park. If you like eating out the variety and quality of restaurants is exceptional and if you like seafood you will not be disappointed! The prices were also very reasonable and you can eat lunch in the street food area of Ortigia ridiculously cheaply but with restaurant quality. A holiday location for adults though or maybe families with older, late teens maybe or older, children as there are really no beaches worth speaking of where younger children could play or swim safely. Loved the island of Ortigia, from where you can visit the key attractions of Syracuse. We enjoyed our visit to the Neapolis archeological park with its spectacular ancient Greek theatre, the Roman amphitheatre and ancient stone quarries, with its the ear of Dionysus and impressive acoustics. The park's display of bronze and metal sculptures are an added bonus. A rainy afternoon was spent in the archeological museum. On Ortigia, we liked our visit to the castle, strolling the streets and choosing where to eat from the many fine restaurants.
