Kite-shaped Trapani makes an impressive sight from lofty Mount Erice, connected to the peninsula below by cable car. On a clear day, the mountain also offers views of Tunisia - one destination of ferries from Trapani Port, alongside Cagliari, Pantelleria and the offshore Egadi Islands.
Overlooking the port is the old town, where arched doorways on narrow streets open onto many cheap apartments and B&Bs on Booking.com. Shabby chic façades sit alongside historic churches, such as understated Trapani Cathedral, somewhat lost amid elegant Corso Vittorio Emanuele, where pavement cafes sit in front of pastel-coloured buildings and metal balconies.
At the tip of the peninsula is the fortress-like Tower of Ligny lighthouse, now housing the Prehistory and Sea Museum. The Colombaia Castle protects the port from an island to the south, while in the other direction the sweeping coastline passes some beachfront hotels with swimming pools.
Villa Margherita Park offers shade from the Mediterranean sun, and Triton’s Fountain graces a neighbouring square. The simple façade of the Basilica of Maria Santissima Annunziata hides the treasures within, including a statue of the Madonna of Trapani which is at the heart of the Easter ‘Misteri’ celebrations.
Between the city and Trapani-Birgi Airport, historic windmills sit beside salt pans. The Salt Museum provides details of this major industry.

Trapani was a bit of a disappointment.
Trapani was a bit of a disappointment. Especially if you're trying to compare it to Noto, Ragusa, and Modica, for example. That comparison isn't really possible/shouldn't be made. If you're coming from Agrigento, continue on to Castellammare del Golfo. And on the way there, be sure to visit Erice. It's truly beautiful little place on a mountain. Trapani is a small city which deserves exploring and getting to know. Lots of hidden gems and beautiful sights. The Museum of Optical Illusions is great. Trapani is a good base for exploring the area by car or public transport. Great base for day trips (to Erice/Egadi Islands/even Marsala), but the city itself is worth visiting! A very walkable location, especially from where we stayed [SAT Appartamenti Locazioni turistiche brevi-G&P]. We were told to try Busiate so we did in so many different styles haha. We ate these seasoned fried chick pea patties that looked like fried halloumi or tofu that had we not spoken to our hosts we would not have known what we were eating! I left this too late and can't recall everything... Spectacular views as per for Sicily. We happened to be there for the opening of "Radio Mare" this cute cafe that becomes a hi-fi listening bar in the eveniing... super vibey, defo check it out. I love both beaches and lively city centers at the same time and Trapani can offer that. A perfect cable car trip directly from Trapani to historic Erice. A beautiful sunset and a view of the illuminated Trapani. Interesting places in the vicinity: Segesta and Selinunte archeological parks, the very unusual Nuova Gibellina (plus Cretto di Buri) and bustling Palermo with majestic monuments. Trapani is a great base for day trips but also has an amazing historical centre. Depending on route of entry the city seems quite industrial on arrival but it is a working port after all. Once you move further in the charm and character of the city become evident. Note that pretty much all the parking needs to be paid for. In June this was 08:00 to midnight at 1eur / hr. The location is ideal for people who want to visit the western part of Sicily by public transport, because a few steps from the property there is a train station and a bus stop from which you can go in many directions (also applies to the airport line).
