Staying at Eko-in was an exceptional and unforgettable experience. I highly recommend booking the Okunoin cemetery night tour—it was both atmospheric and deeply moving. The meals are fully vegetarian and beautifully presented. If you're not a fan of tofu, some of the dinner dishes might not be to your taste—but that, too, is part of the cultural and spiritual experience. I was initially anxious about sleeping on a traditional futon, but it turned out to be surprisingly comfortable and added to the overall sense of authenticity. A truly unique stay.

It a beautiful temple, it is very well kept. The room was very spacious and comfortable, all in tatami floor, tastefully decorated, very clean and well maintained, with aircon available and even a TV. I loved that there was a complimentary tea, a yukata and a toothbrush. The temple has a bath (onsen) available and a morning prayer ceremony.

Great place to stay in Koyasan. The place is new and very clean. Design is a mix of traditional Japanese tatami with a modern bed. The hosts make sure you understand how everything works. Short walk to main temples. Great value for money!

From the reception to the checkout, everything was perfect. The monks were friendly and extremely helpful as well as being discrete. The complex is set back from the road so it is really peaceful. Dinner is served around 17:30 and is absolutely delicious. You are in a private room screened off from the other guests. The dinner is a highlight of the stay in Koya-san. I would just advise that this experience is not really recommended for younger kids and teenagers with limited food options. Dressing up in a yukata may be fun but a 9pm curfew and peaceful atmosphere isn't conducive to rest and relaxation either for them or the other guests. If you intend to do the night tour of the cemetery just remember the curfew. In summer nightfall is around 7:30. Before breakfast we participated in the morning service with everything explained in English A unique experience on Koya-san and an interesting insight into Buddhist practice.

Our stay at the temple was fantastic! Everyone was so nice, we had a comfortable stay and very much enjoyed the temple itself and the rest of Koyasan. The morning ceremony was also great, we can really recommend everything :)

Staf was very very kind, smiling and welcoming. It was all very clean. We took of our shoes and they had shoes for the inside and also separate shoes for the toilet, so it was all very clean. Good location, around the middle of the main street. Dinner and breakfest (vegetarian) were included and it was an amazing experience and also very good. Dinner was inside our room and breakfest was after the morning ceremony and was also not too bad but just a bit small. It was across the street from danjo garan and it was amazing in day and night. Sleeping on the mats was actually not too bad at all. The ceremony was very special.

It’s a magical place.

It’s a magical place. Lost on top of a mountain, spiritual, ancient, far from big tourism, fantastic. Do not miss Kongobuji, including the Jabara-Michi temple road all up to the Kongobuji Saito, and then absolutely the Okuno-in cemetery all up to Kongobuji Okuno-in temple.

Koyasan is a historic, spiritual, naturally beautiful location. The ability to be around active temples and attend fire ceremony was unforgettable. The information center and excellent bus system made it easy to navigate. However, if you like to walk, most sights are easily walked to, as it is quite flat. There were several nice coffee houses and the place that offers night tours of Okunoin also is a bar in the evening, serving excellent local craft beers. A surprise.

I came here for the history and the experience of staying in a monastery/pilgrim lodging, but I left with much more than that, as all the people I met here were wonderful, from fellow travelers to local cafe owners. One word of advice would be to take your time exploring Oku no In cemetery, as it's worth a good long contemplative walk.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat. We arrived on a Friday afternoon, wondered into the info centre Saturday & they were very helpful. Walked through the cemetery & then had lunch in one of the cafes open. Not many open on a Saturday or Sunday. Sunday a.m we experience the Ceremony half by the Monks in the main temple. Wouldn’t visit again in the winter as it’s extremely cold.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely. Would have enjoyed having more time to visit the town. We only stayed one night (which is good, because it was very expensive). However, the train logistics from Okayama meant that we ararived in Koyasan about 2pm and so had very little time to see it. We left after lunch the following day. Two fuller days and one night would have been ideal.

Staying at the temple was a delightful experience.

Staying at the temple was a delightful experience. The food was different but very good, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Attending the morning prayer was another highlight, providing a truly memorable experience. The location was excellent, being very close to the bus stop. The staff were extremely nice and accommodating, allowing us to drop off our luggage before the check-in time. Although everything was great, I personally didn't like the heater in the room. I think it uses some kind of oil, and for me personally, the oil smell was a little too strong. Next time, I would prefer a room with an attached washroom. Since it's an old temple, it doesn't have central heating, which is understandable, but it gets a little cold outside of the room when going to use the washrooms. The rooms aren't that comfortable, but we already knew that since we went for the experience, not for comfort. Just wanted to add that!

Nice property with some good coffee. Rooms are clean and ours was family room so more space with private bathroom. Brace up yourself if you visit in the end of Dec as it’s cold (the owner sent us notification) and the staff try to do their best to keep you warm. Did do the night excursion to the cemetery and it was awesome - the Buddhist monk was the guide and he did it great. Strongly recommend to stay at this place if you want to visit Koyasan but didn’t find vacant places/wish to stay at temples

Hello The hotel has impeccable service. The rooms were clean, the food was spectacular. The location is the best, very close to the bus. The hosts (monks) were very kind and respectful. I did not speak Japanese or English, but communication with the translators was sufficient. They helped us a lot at the reception. Without a doubt, when I return, I will stay at that hotel. The tranquility and atmosphere of this temple stat was extraordinary. We were so privileged to experience the morning meditation and enjoy the grounds. The dinner and breakfast was unique and beautifully presented. The taste of each element was exquisite. We also did a night walk through the cemetery and the village of Mount Koyasan the next day. Thank you for such a serene experience and welcoming us into your temple.

A fantastic experience ‘temple lodging’. A beautiful place to stay with great staff. The room booked had its own bathroom which I would recommend. Looked out over temples and Japanese gardens. The food prepared for dinner and breakfast was stunning, with lots of interesting flavours. All the experiences included were well done, too.
