The mattress and pillows were extremely comfortable, so I slept like a baby every single night. The room was also super nice with the tatami flooring. Very cosy. Actually the whole place feels cosy and helps relax. The free half ramen every evening was also a very nice touch. Also this hotel is very conveniently located: it's close to Matsue Castle, close to the Shimano Art Museum, close to locations where you can take beautiful pictures of the sun setting on lake Shinji, close to ferry terminals to go on lake Shinji, close to Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station from where you can take the local Ichibata trains to places like Izumo or Matsue Vogel Park.

I only stayed 2 nights at Matsue. I liked the hotel so much that I wish I could stay longer. It is really close to the station and it is convenient to visit the Shimane Art Museum and the Apache Museum (by train).

Fantastic location. Right outside Matsue station. Bed was decent size and quite comfy. An alarm's integrated into the headrest. Comes with a mini fridge. Curtains were thick enough to block out the train station lights.

The location was perfect — 2 blocks from Matsue Station, a 15 minute walk from Matsue Castle and the Art Museum, and with a convenience store around the corner. The staff were very accomodating (me, a non-Japanese speaker). The in-house coin laundry was handy (cost me only ¥300 to wash and dry). The shared bath made me want to spend more time in the hotel than out! The double room was plenty spacious for me as a solo traveller. I have no complaints and enjoyed my stay.

The tourist information Centre was great.

The tourist information Centre was great. Had good information and most. There is a loop bus to take you to the Castle and other points. The observation deck at the Bank was wonderful. The views spectacular of Matsue. Looked a tidy place, well looked after and comfortable to visit.

    Fantastic scenery and food.

Fantastic scenery and food. Check out the beaches to the North but don't worry about the local mountain lookouts. They were all atrocious one lane roads in bad condition which only took you 3/4's of the way up the mountain which was then followed by your needing to walk another 1000 steps or more to get to the top. Good if you want the cardio but terrible in the middle of summer.

Matsue is a 400-year old city so there is a lot of history. Learn about it at the great Matsue History museum which is close to the castle, Lafcadio Hearn museum, and nice shops. The many rivers within the city and very large lakes like Shinji come right up to the city. You can beautiful views of the lakes on trips to Izumo shrine, and Yuushien and Adachi museums. Our 5 full days were not enough. People were very welcoming.

Matsue is a beautiful smaller town with an amazing castle and grounds, samurai houses and lovely streets to wander around. We did an afternoon train trip to a stunning temple in Izumo and also to a nearby onsen town. Matsue is a gem as it has so many wonderful sites to visit without the crowds of Kyoto. We will definitely be going back.

Our stay was brief - only two full days - but in addition to its castle and historic district made for walking, Matsue is a good jumping off point for day trips to Izumo Taisha shrine, the Adachi Art Museum and the garden at Yushien. One evening we had an enjoyable meal at a local "okonomiyaki" restaurant on the quiet street behind the hotel. The 88-year old proprietress was energetic, fun to speak with, and recommended a very tasty locally-brewed sake.

Matsue Castle and the surrounding castle complex are incredible. It’s a far more authentic experience of feudal era Japanese castles than the remodeled, refurbished, and in many ways entirely rebuilt castles of Osaka, Nagoya, and Hiroshima, to name a few.
