It is a lovely location.
It is a lovely location. It has a looped walk that shows multiple shrines and the old castle, watch out for the bears. There is an old street with wooden houses, it is a bit of a tourist trap and the shops are over priced but it is worth seeing. Great visits possible in this area - the Ropeway (cable car) up into the alps, the Onsen, Hida Village was superb and had loads of additional activities for children, and Takayama was a complete surprise with is bijou shops in the beautiful old quarter. Takayama has a mix of quaint old architecture and modern smalltown buildings. It is less crowded than Kyoto and great for exploring on foot. Takayama is also a great base for making day trips to places like the Shirakawa-go Unesco heritage site, Kamikochi nature park and Shinhotaka Ropeway. The Nohi Bus Centre next to Takayama Station is excellently run and provides efficient transport services to these attractions.Guest review bychengSingapore - 10

Takayama is beautiful, geared towards local and foreign tourists. The only catch is that some places will only take catch so you need to keep that in mind. We found beautiful crafts close to the temple, we also visited the local morning markets and caught the bus to Shirakawa-Go which I cannot reccomend enough.Guest review byHelenaMalta

We really enjoyed our stay; the western style rooms were very comfortable, the Outside Onsen brilliant (you take a little cable car down to the river opposite the hotel) and all included in the price. However the restaurant was outstanding- beautifully presented Japanese food, we had ordered vegetarian ahead and it was really impressive. We traveled by bus from Takayama and the bus stops every hour outside the hotel. The same bus takes you to the Shinhotaka ropeway which was spectacular.Guest review byTarnyaUnited Kingdom

Must have the largest hotel gift and souvenir shop anywhere. What else can I say? If not the best hotel we stayed at in Japan, It was surely in the top 2.
