Takayama has a mix of quaint old architecture and modern smalltown buildings. It is less crowded than Kyoto and great for exploring on foot. Takayama is also a great base for making day trips to places like the Shirakawa-go Unesco heritage site, Kamikochi nature park and Shinhotaka Ropeway. The Nohi Bus Centre next to Takayama Station is excellently run and provides efficient transport services to these attractions.

Takayama is beautiful, geared towards local and foreign tourists. The only catch is that some places will only take catch so you need to keep that in mind. We found beautiful crafts close to the temple, we also visited the local morning markets and caught the bus to Shirakawa-Go which I cannot reccomend enough.

Takayama is a jewell in the mountains.

Takayama is a jewell in the mountains. Small, walkable, ( around the city or in the mountains ), has great food, friendly people… There are plenty of day trips from Takayama. We could not go to the valley to try onsen ( heavy rains ) and went to the Green hotel instead - the onsen there was, surprisingly, beautiful and relaxing. The train journey from Takayama to Kyoto is spectacular ( sit on the left side ) - amazing views of the mountains and the river.

    It’s a beautiful historic town.

It’s a beautiful historic town. The hotel is in a perfect location. The town was easy to get around , plenty of stores, and restaurants. I would recommend taking a taxi to the Hida Folk village. Make sure to get to the morning market. See if there are any festivals going on. Try a Hida burger near the treat station. Enjoy all that Takyama has to offer. It was a lovely stay.

Takayama is beautiful in summer, the scenery is amazing, the historic villages are pretty and well kept. There is a large variety of food options and great coffee shops. We wished we stayed longer! Plenty of day trip options by bus, we went to Shirakawago. The train trip between Takayama and Nagoya was a highlight of our trip, meandering along a stunning waterway.

Takayama was good but beware if you plan to do the Hakusan Shirakawa-go White Road drive - the website said it was open, but when we arrived it was closed. Better to ring in advance to confirm. Good thing is there are plenty of others things to do in the area.

We stayed here for 1 night during the Takayama Spring Festival , it was one of the few hotels with a room available during this very busy time in Takayama. Turned out to be a great stay. A short walk to Hilda Folk Village. A traditional ryokan with onsen which we tried for the first time and enjoyed the experience. We caught the bus from the city centre to get there. They provided a free shuttle back into Takayama the next morning.

The hospitality and good humor of the owners made our best stay in Japan. The ryokan is very nice and clean. They were attentive to our needs; the men's baths weren't working that day, so they let us use the private ones. They offered us a delicious traditional dinner, explaining each dish and how to eat it. If you visit Takayama, it's highly recommended. Arigato Hideharu-san, greetings from Valencia (Spain)

Traditional ryokan with great attention. The staff was extremely friendly and provided an excellent service. The breakfast and specially the dinner was fantastic, the best meal by far we had in Japan. The onsen of the hotel is small but very nice. Access to the onsen of the Alpina hotel is provided as well, which is bigger and having nice views of the city.

probably the best stay i’ve had in japan… traditional ryokan with futon beds. robes are provided and you have access to three private onsens (hot tubs).. just lock the door behind. good facilities as far as tea and coffee goes.. only a short walk from the hirayu onsen bus terminal which takes you to both kamikochi and takayama in a short time.
