Our 2-night stay was about doing a day trip to Castlepoint which we achieved. Fabulous spot with lovely sandy beach. Can recommend stopping @ the local store for a feed of Blue Cod & chips. Couldn't have been fresher. Delicious food @ Tripoli & CBK each evening. Coffee @ Strada was good too. Queen Elizabeth Park is worth checking out. The travel is 6-7 hours from Auckland.
The travel is 6-7 hours from Auckland. Maybe 2 nights is just right if you want to see all the attractions of Masterton. Unfortunately, we only went to Castlepoint due to time constraints. There is a dairy where we ate lunch.Guest review byRosaNew Zealand - 8.0

Queen Elizabeth park is great, there is a train and boat...
Queen Elizabeth park is great, there is a train and boat rides and the park itself is huge, on the day we visited there everything was free to go on and there was a mini market so you could buy some food. Then you can go across the road to the pools - indoor and outdoor and that was free also. We liked the compactness of Masterton and its got heaps of shops and heaps of options Makkies, KFC, Subways, PaknSave, Countdown etc. We got Roast meals one night, very yum and way too much. This guest house is over 100 years old with lots of character including traditional NZ wooden features (flooring, beams and panelling). The hosts, Leon & Kinnie Vermeulen, were incredibly friendly from the time of arrival to our departure, finishing off with photos. Breakfast was plentiful and an opportunity to meet the other guests. It was great being able to drive right to the door but also having internal access to the hotel complex. The bathroom was modern, stylish and practical.
