FAQs about hotels in Wellington

Wild and Wonderful Welly

Acclaimed for its thriving art, film and cultural scene, windy ‘Welly’ is enclosed by mountains such as Kaukau and Victoria on one side and the picturesque Wellington Harbour on the other. Wellington has the distinction of being the world’s southernmost capital city.

As the gateway to New Zealand’s magical south island, Queens Wharf is headquarters for ferry services across Cook Strait as well as in the direction of Eastbourne on the other side of the harbour.

Get your bearings by using the Kelburn cable car that starts at Lambton Quay and travels up to the Botanic Gardens and Carter Observatory with its sweeping views across the Miramar Peninsula and local bays.

Don’t miss a visit to New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa, which also incorporates the National Art Gallery. Cuba Street offers a multicultural touch and includes the Wellington Night Market with an array of international cuisines. Ascot Street is a lively shopping precinct.

Wellington Airport has flights to other domestic destinations as well as Australia and Fiji. Booking.com can help you choose your hotel to round off a fantastic city trip vacation.

Recommend getting a snapper card for ease of travel.

Recommend getting a snapper card for ease of travel. Initially $10 but providers cheaper fares on public transport. Utilise the metlink app to find nearest bus stop, timetables, trip planning etc. Very useful. Makes getting out of the city to visit much easier. Live tracking. Highly recommend these 2 essentials. I would recommend a behind the scenes walking tour of the Opera House and St James Theatre - my highlight on this trip. Wellington is a easy walking city. Catch the bus to Mt Victoria for the stunning views then walk down to Oriental Bay, the zoo or other walking trails. There are plenty of fine eating places. Most have menus on the windows. There are also food trucks and indoor food markets. It is very vibrant. The water front on a clear sunny place is the tops. Cant say no to the Cable car and a walk through the botanical gardens. This city offers a lot for solo travellers with a wide range of activities that be free.

    Everything is awesome in Wellington.

Everything is awesome in Wellington. Honestly- we talked about moving there!! You can walk right through the CBD. Lots of shops, cafes, bars. (Try 'the Puffin', 'Charley Noble' and 'Docksider'...) The buses are clean and prompt and there are ubers everywhere. The suburbs are fabulous (try Island Bay bakery!) There are lots of new well marked bike lanes - there are hills surrounding, but the city is flat and you can bike to beaches like Oriental Bay and Island Bay and right around the coast. From Oriental Bay you can walk right up Mt Victoria in 20 minutes. (Scenes in the Lord of the Rings were filmed here - the Black Riders and Hobbits). Stunning views 360degrees of the harbour and hills. Fantastic Māori history displays and dual language naming. The town belt is beautiful and there are lots of beaches. It's windy sometimes but we loved the fresh air. Do not miss this fabulous place.

truly vibrant beautiful culturally rich city. Stay in the central area, excellent public transport. Walk to all the sights. The I office great support, Te Papa, National Library, parliament buildings, the wonderful fashion, bookshops (old and new) waterfront magic!! lots of choices in the restaurants, smells from the food make you hungry. Pubs very grand, like the theatres. Has to be one of the most beautiful, cleanest, safest cities in the world. Everything in close proximity! Check out shops and street music in Cuba St!

I was catching up with friends and family so that was my focus on this trip. Wellington does have brilliant cafes, restaurants and attractions such as the Cable Car, Te Papa, Mt Victoria lookout etc. Parking in the city is expensive so look into parking apps as they can save you lots of money. The Wakefield Market on a Sunday is worth going to but parking can be challenging if you go later in the day.

The location was perfect - I stayed another day in Wellington before my flight. The hotel is basically just upstairs from the airport. It took me a whole 10 minutes from hotel check-out to flight check-in. Taking the bus to city centre is a breeze. Bus stop is in the car park building that is connected to the airport building. It was a short walk. The hotel room was comfortable and clean. The sofa in the room was bigger - usually just an armchair in other hotels. Good customer service from the staff at reception (Yara).

An oasis in the city - a little away from the main CBD but central enough to walk or catch a cheap uber. Has a couple of eatng places handy. The reception desk was very helpful. Has car parking which is a bonus. This was a brilliant place to stay the apartment had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. My husband loved watching the trains, planes and ships coming and going. Can recommend.

The Shepherd Arms is one of the few hotels in New Zealand that has an 'English Pub feel' (where I have stayed some 500 different times in different pubs) about it and this is what I look for when travelling even around New Zealand. The dinner menu, although small, was good and the food very acceptable. Will stay again when next in need of accommodation in Wellington

The location of the hotel was so handy and was in walking distance of many of Wellington's main attractions and city centre. Check in/out was a breeze and the staff were lovely and made this process very easy. The room was clean and tidy and had a fresh feel about it.
