A Seat of Learning and Royalty
Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.
The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.
The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.
The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.
Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.

Coimbra is a very nice town.

After Porto and then Lisbon we found Coimbra to be a welcome relief from the tourist hustle and bustle. Its a lovely town, quieter than the bigger cities but with some great sites. The University Library is spectacular as is the Cathedrals and the old town is very interesting wandering around. It is a nice city, but lots of construction and we were there during Burning of the Ribbons, and the parade so the University Library was closed. We saw the gardens, which were ok. I thought it was fun to see the parade and all of the students celebrating, but my husband said he could have skipped Coimbra. We stayed on the main street, Rua Ferreira Borges, up the hill, (near town hall), but our friends stayed in a place that was parallel to the river, R. da Alegria. The city will be more inviting in a few years when some of the construction projects are completed. The people seemed friendly and helpful. I was disappointed to not find any churches or cathedrals that didn't charge an admission to enter. After visiting Lisbon and Porto it was nice to visit this beautiful historic city and escape the crowds. We enjoyed the music (Fado), food, and history of the city. The accommodation is clean and spacious and it has a lovely little terrace area. Unlike some places where you have to rely on other travellers in adjoining rooms being mindful and quiet, you will have this one all to yourself. Good communication from the owner. When I compared the room, the size was more comfortable and the view was amazing. The hotel offers a very nice breakfast and at night it has a light menu with drinks. Their rooftop area is amazing! We were met at the address on time and escorted up to the apartment. Communication was clear and accurate. There are a couple of restaurants and bakeries a short stroll away. Place is clean with private bathroom. It was very clear description how to get to the village. There is restaurant named "Mila" next door.
