History and Sandy Algarve Beaches
With a long and rich history, Lagos is nowadays a famous beach resort of the sunny Portuguese region of Algarve. Including wide sandy beaches and quiet coves enclosed by ochre cliffs, it also offers a lively city centre with one of the best mixes between history and modernity in the region.
King Henry the Navigator chose it as a base for his trips of discovery during the 15th century, and later on, it became the residence of the Algarve governors. The Old Town is circled by medieval walls, typical narrow streets, historic buildings and charming squares. Apart from being an important centre for sailing, the city has amazing beaches, like Meia Praia or Praia da Dona Ana. Although the cliffs were amazing to see, the beaches are hard to access. Parking is a nightmare. Lots of steps down to the beach. Not good for anyone with mobility issues. Dona Ana beach is pretty small during high tide. North Americans who are used to easily accessible, long beaches in Florida, Carolinas, Maine or California may find the beach accessibility stressful and the beaches disappointing. Lots of restaurants and stores in the central area. Touristy but fun for a short stay. Lots of bars for the younger crowd. If you are staying in the central historical area walking distance to the restaurants, you will likely have to park outside the city walls and walk to your accommodation.
