Sleepy scenic town with some really cool cafes and restaurants. Airy , non crowded night market with lots of games and options for food. Even without Taroko fully open after the earthquake , Hualien is a great stop over for the scenic East Coast of Taiwan.

This is my second visit to Hualien City.

This is my second visit to Hualien City. It was good to get to know the area better. Although I spent the majority of my time at Dong Awa University, I was able to visit the Stone Museum and the Slow Food centre.

Our interest was in travelling up the Taroko Gorge.

Our interest was in travelling up the Taroko Gorge. Although spectacular, the access limitations imposed since the last major earthquake made our travel almost a non-event. Be aware, the visitor centre is closed, 2nd Monday each month, grrr.

It was an odd time for Hualien city when we visited.

It was an odd time for Hualien city when we visited. We were out of season and the Taroko gorge was still largely closed due to earthquake/storms. The town itself is potentially interesting but not particularly touristy. It is a little difficult to get around as it doesn't have a clear 'centre' and the bus routes/times are a little 'interpretational'. The night market at Dongdamen is big and got some good places. Farglory park is a good fun day out but depends very much on how busy it is.

Good deals as the city and region (let alone Taiwan) is struggling for tourists. People are very friendly, region is pretty. You'll want to rent a motorbike, car, bicycle, or be aware of your options. Trains and buses are better than my home country of Canada, but that's not saying much. Explore outside the city, as this is where the beauty is. Lots of hikes, history, and people to meet, but you have to get outside your comfort zone to do so.

Different vibe than Taipei - seems really nice chill place but my stay in Hualien was too short to give more details. Found a nice place for breakfast, night market, a promenade, good connection with Taroko Park, great connection thanks to train station with various other locations in Taiwan

Once you know your way around, accommodation is very near the train station and bus station. Use the West exit ( looks older) and hotel is 80m to the right of the 7-11. Water dispenser available to fill our bottles. Bathroom was renovated and clean. Staff helped us call a tour operator as we did not have a Taiwan number.

The staff member A Hong introduced the surrounding tourist attractions with great enthusiasm and help us carry our luggage upstairs. We are grateful to him for helping us buy train tickets and driving us to the train station. He also helps us solve the problem of not having New Taiwan dollars temporarily.

Breakfast is great! The spread is beyond my expectations and I believe it is one of the best among the few hotels I stayed in Taiwan during the period. The "Happy Hour" is also very nice with beer, drinks and snacks. It allows us to chill after a long day checking out Hualien.

The hotel is close to the train station. The staff is lovely. Our room was very big, we've never had such a big room in taiwan for so little money.
