The area has changed a fair bit since the 80s where it gained a bad reputation. However there is still much to be done. Many of the shops don't take care of their sidewalk and it makes for a bad bit of walking. At night you do need to be hyper aware of your surroundings. This side of the Bronx is not nice. When your UBER driver says "I wouldn't stay here", starts your vacation on the wrong foot. We went to a Yankee Game for the weekend, UBER'd everywhere. I needed a place to stay for the night before my drive home. There isn’t any soap in the bathroom. The towels are dirty and stained. The bed had semen on it and urine stains. When I asked the guy in the little room to change my room he gave my a room that had again semen stains and smelled like cigarettes.
