I loved this place! If you’re a nature lover, it’s the perfect spot. There’s a great restaurant with a fixed price of €25 per person, but you also have the option to barbecue outside your bungalow. I recommend stocking up on groceries beforehand, as the nearest supermarket is about an hour away. The property offers both indoor and outdoor bathrooms. I tried the outdoor shower, and I highly recommend it for the experience! Even though the property is located within a reserve, we were pleasantly surprised by how few insects bothered us during the barbecue. However, it’s worth noting that, even of the bungalows are a very nice and well manteined, being surrounded by nature, it’s possible for a few insects to make their way inside the little house.

De Hoop is one of the most magical places I’ve ever visited. The nature is absolutely breathtaking, endless landscapes, incredible wildlife, and the most pristine white dunes that make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world. You can hop on a bike and explore the reserve, spotting zebras, ostriches, and antelopes roaming freely around you. The staff is exceptional, warm, and welcoming, and the decor is making you feel like you are in another time, far away from the rush of modern life. It’s a place where nature, tranquility, and pure beauty come together perfectly. A must-visit!

De Hoop is such a special place and Opstal houses create a perfect environment from which to appreciate the natural magic that surrounds it. This is our 3rd visit to Opstal and the nature reserve and this time we bought about 10 friends who all agreed that it was the high point of our holiday to SA. On previous visits the rock pools have been one of my favourite features and I was disappointed in this trip to discover that a higher tide would make these inaccessible for our entire duration as they had been a highlight on previous trips but, hard to know who to complain to about the tides?!... the moon maybe?! However the weather was cooler than my previous visits which made walking and exploring much easier. We did several sunrise missions to the coast and it was simply stunning. Accommodation is no frills but very clean and totally in keeping with the simple wonder of its surroundings. In short De Hoop is stunning and Opstal houses create a perfectly balanced atmosphere from which to appreciate it. Bravo!

The Blue house exceeded all our expectations. It was clean, nicely furnished, well equipped and everything works. There was more than enough space for the five of us. The hostess even supplied us with emergency lights for load shedding. We only stayed one night, would love to spend more time at the Blue house.

It is worth your while to visit De Hoop.

It is worth your while to visit De Hoop. We saw a lot of animals but unfortunately no whales due to the wind. The beach is amazing as is the restaurant by the beach. The long dirt road is a bit of a challenge.

Beautiful reserve with wildlife and stunning scenery.

Beautiful reserve with wildlife and stunning scenery. Some nice walks and routes for mountain biking. Beaches are great to look at but didn’t look safe for swimming. Range of accommodation options and an excellent restaurant.

The reserve is not a big 5 animal park but has an amazing biodiversity of flora and birds. It has an inland lagoon, a large white dune field and a beautiful coastline where you can spot whales in the right season. It also has the only remaining Cape Vulture colony in the Western Cape. To access the park, you need to travel on long stretches of gravel road, so is a bit off the beaten track. You need to pay a conservation fee at the entrance (check Cape Nature for rates). It hosts the multiday slack-packing hike of the Whale Trail. However, it also has lovely day walks and bike rides, where you can get up quite close to the animals.

The chalet was very clean and the bed very comfortable The table was beautifully set for us with serviettes and a protea on the table There was coffee available and load shedding was adequately catered for The beaches at Koppie Alleen were beautiful and there is a lovely walk along the lagoon. The dinner's food was amazing although I thought it was a bit expensive

A good stop off spot for a few days of relaxation and family time. Mountain bike tracks aplenty. Also short walking trails. Plenty of guided activities (extra charge) The road is a good dirt road, no 4x4 needed, but prepare for dust! Bring meat and braai for dinner - the dining room is a fixed menu and very expensive. Most cottages do not have a vlei view. Request a vlei outlook when booking.
