Set inside the Matera Sassi area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Palazzo Degli Abati offers unique rooms carved in the rock or in a 18th-century building. This family-run property with free Wi-Fi offers panoramic views of the city. Stayed in a cave room with shell fossils in the cave walls; it was a well lit cave but with all the comforts of home including shower, air conditioning, TV, and we were lucky in that we had no stairs to take to our room. Also there is a lift that can take you up to the upper level restaurant, Crialòss, that has a panoramic view of Matera. Also very much appreciated the welcome drink. Having a prosecco with the spectacular view that is Matera on a sunny day on a patio is one of the best memories I have. Staff were also incredibly communicative prior to my stay and were able to help arrange for guarded parking and a shuttle into Matera so that was zero stress.

Overlooking Matera’s Sasso Barisano, Fra I Sassi Residence is set in restored 17th-century buildings inside the Matera Sassi UNESCO site area. It offers a sun terrace and air-conditioned rooms with stone walls and views of the historical centre. Fantastic place with nice rooms and a beautiful view of the old city. Very central and close to everything. The breakfast was so delicious with a great selection of local specialties. The staff were all very friendly. Would definitely recommend!

Ridola Hotel was designed in 1872 by Leonardo Ridola, a famous local architect. It still has original vaults and pavements, and its façade features a solar clock from the 1900s. Very nice place, good location and friendly stuff.

The In Pietra is set in a converted monastery from the 13th century. Today it offers a large hall, a reading room and a wine cellar. Got a great value deal on a small single room (which was small but very comfortable, may be a bit stuffy during mid summer but in early October it was perfect) for just a single night (busy itenerary) and was treated as if I was a regular staying in a suite for the nth time. Super friendly and helpful staff (everyone if you speak some Italian, but also fluent English speakers on staff). Location is great and the views from the hotel are breathtaking.

Air-conditioned rooms all feature a flat-screen satellite TV, a seating area and fully fitted private bathroom with a shower. The location of this place is excellent. Right in the sassi. Monica took care of us really well. It made Matera more magical for us. The breakfast is excellent too.
