Conveniently located just a 3-minute walk from JR Karuizawa Shinkansen (bullet train) Station, Hotel Grand Vert Kyu Karuizawa offers spacious guestrooms with a comfortable sofa and free WiFi. Guests are welcomed at the lobby with a fireplace.

Featuring unique colour schemes and décor, each room comes with a flat-screen TV and a fridge. The stylish en suite bathroom comes with a large bath tub, a hairdryer and free toiletries. This is a fantastic hotel; location, service, amenities, and the room were all excellent. The people at the front desk were friendly and very helpful, this applied to literally 5-6 people I had interacted with. The service was great, even after electing not to have our room made up, we came back to fresh waters and towels by the door. The room was spacious and very clean. We had the traditional Japanese room, two double beds with a tatami area, for a family of 4, two kids 11 and 14, there were plenty of space for us. Futons were available for the tatami area which was perfect the kids, and the beds were much softer than the typical hotels in Japan. Separate shower and toilet room, both with sinks, was also very convenient. There’s also a library next to a lounge area with a cozy fireplace and cushy leather chairs and free espresso and drinks. I was able to get some work done without being disturbed as it was very quiet. The hotel is about a 7-8 min leisure walk from the Kariuzawa station, super quiet neighborhood, though it may be because the ski season had virtually ended. It took around 10-15 min walk from the hotel to the outlet shopping area in the south side of the station, which had all of the restaurants. The location was superb, easy to find places to eat and get to the ski resort, a 10 min free bus ride from the outlet area.

Located in a forest, Tokonamiso offers a nature retreat with Japanese-style rooms, barbecue facilities and free WiFi access in the lobby area. Hot-spring baths, a sauna and bathroom facilities are available at its sister property, a few steps away. Drinks vending machines and free parking are on site. Staff were wonderful and helpful. The facility was very clean and comfortable. Stayed in the the annex, which I heard just opened last month. It was just across the street. The tea offered added an authentic experience. It was 12 minutes walking distance to the train station, although they still offered shuttle services.

Boasting various indoor and outdoor hot spring baths, Izumiya Zenbe is a historical Japanese-style accommodation with a chic ambiance, established in 1876. Some hot spring baths can be rented for private use. The property is a 15-minute bus ride from JR Matsumoto Station, and a 10-minute bus ride to the national treasure, Matsumoto Castle. Free parking is available. Izumiya Zenbe is LOVELY - I don't think the photos do it justice. The staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful. The building was an amazing old structure with beautiful little gardens in the walkways. The room we had was very nice, with tatami mats and futon beds. We loved the tea set and the little table with the heater underneath...! We also booked the breakfast and dinner service, and we are very glad we did. The private dining spaces and kaiseki experience was awesome. As was cruising around the ryokan in our yukata robes. We only used the barrel bath, rather than the rotenburo, but it was so good (although very hot!). A very relaxing place, we would happily stay here again.
