Staying in a monastery in Koya is a rare experience, but for those who'd like to have that with minimal costs, there are two options: either room-or-bathroom sharing lodgings, or Sekishoin! You get to enjoy the privacy of your own room, for a reasonable price compared to everything else around. And, to top it off, the people here were lovely. There were complementary woven bracelets upon checking in. I was late to my breakfast, and I was pleasantly surprised to find it waiting for me (and needless to say, the food is delicious). There are also explanatory notes pertaining to various things in Japanese culture or monastery life, such as clothing or meals. Final note, the futon was super comfy and perfectly warm despite the cold snowy winter.

Guest House hachi hachi is a very beautiful and clean guest house, near the Koyasan center. Nori, the guest house host, is very kind and helpful, and he gave me a lot of informations about Koyasan. It was warm and comfortable - the owner made it even more welcoming with a comprehensive introduction to the town and sound advice. It’s just a 2 min walk to the cemetery, the bus stop that brings you to the cable car station, and entry to a hiking path.

Dinner was perfect. Breakfast too early, about 7 am. All the cafes open at 11 am. So you could eat another breakfast :). Very beautiful garden at temple. After dinner you could go to onsen.

We loved our stay with the exceptionally kind and helpful couple. It’s a remote village up a steep mountain road, with a great bar next door! The food was delicious. We enjoyed chatting to the hosts. We had a trip to Mt Koyasan and got drenched in a rain storm. The kind hosts dried our shoes in a special Japanese machine!

We loved the attention to detail, especially the vintage record player with Japanese vinyls and how well stocked the kitchen was (oil, spices, rice, coffee etc. - the best we had in Japan!). Staff was very accommodating. Very spacious, perfect for our group. We had to change the group size due to a mistake of our own and it was very easy to resolve, thank you for that. We had a great time!
