There’s a genuine down-to-earth character to the pub, with terracotta floor tiles, exposed brick walls, open fires, cottage furniture and quirky little oddities wherever you cast your eye, including an original iron water pump, uncovered in the renovations. Ceilings are low with oak timber beams and in the evening it’s cast with a warm yellow glow that comes from dozens of lamps and lanterns. The smell of open fires crackling. There are 11 boutique bedrooms, all set on the first and second floor and each one individually decorated to retain its own individual charms. Room number 7 has it’s own small sitting room and balcony overlooking the garden, with the bedroom on a mezzanine floor above. It’s cute, quirky and comfortable. Breakfast is downstairs in the dining area and as well as the help-yourself Continental offering, which includes fresh croissants and freshly brewed coffee, there’s a great choice of cooked options including all variations on the eggs (Benedict, Florentine and Royale), smashed avo, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, bacon or sausage sandwiches, and full English and full veggie breakfast.
