Located within the buffer zone of a UNESCO world heritage site, Srirangam is our homage to the unique historical and geo-cultural centre of humanism, global learning, and the arts founded by Rabindranath Tagore, at the turn of the last century, in Shantiniketan. Cradled in nature, we are an independent, cozy, atmospheric villa-style homestay, with six well-appointed ensuite bedrooms. Housing curated art works, Srirangam is distinguished by a design architecture that is rooted in India’s history, culture, tradition, and artisanship. Indian in its soul, the aesthetic of Srirangam is universal and timeless in its appeal. We have a mini library, with a collection of fiction, non-fiction and coffee table books. The bright and airy basement of Srirangam houses the Srinidhi Art Gallery. Srirangam in Sanskrit means an arena (Rangam) that holds within it a trove of beauty, resplendence and wellbeing (Sri). We believe we are aptly named. Our homestay embodies the time-honoured Indian ethos of Atithi Devo Bhava, i.e. ‘Guest is god’. We therefore look forward to welcoming you as an honoured guest - to spend a few days at Srirangam - the realm of beauty, bliss, and wellbeing.
Shumon Sengupta is an international humanitarian and development practitioner by profession and has served in West Africa, East Africa, South Aisa and South-East Aisa for over the last eighteen years. Ananya Banerjee Sengupta is a self-taught artist (water-colourist), whose works may be found displayed in the bedrooms. Their daughter Madhura is currently studying in the UK. Shantiniketan is where Shumon’s paternal grandparents (Niharkana and Shailendu Sengupta) had settled in early 50s, during the post-partition period, after moving from Dhaka, Bangladesh. They were life-members of Vishwabharati, and Niharkana was a close associate of Indira Devi Chaudhurani (Tagore’s niece), actively involved with the Alapini Mahila Samity and the Karu Sangha. Avid art, culture and travel enthusiasts, the family loves meeting and knowing people with different worldviews, from all walks of lif
Located within the buffer zone of a UNESCO world heritage site, Srirangam is our homage to the unique historical and geo-cultural centre of humanism, global learning, and the cultivation of arts - the Vishwabharati University - that was founded by Asia’s first Nobel Laurate, Rabindranath Tagore, around the turn of the 20th century, in Shantiniketan. Srirangam is located along the Sriniketan – Shantiniketan road, adjoining Srajani Shilpagram (Eastern Zonal Cultural Center). It is less than two kilometres from the core Shantiniketan UNESCO World Heritage Somplex. The popular Sonajhuri Haat (weekend handicrafts fair) is about 5 kms away. From Bolpur railway station, the shortest route is head towards Sriniketan via the Bolpur – Sriniketan road and take the right-hand turn from Kalisayar on to the Sriniketan – Shantiniketan road. As you take this road, you will find a wholesale vegetable market (mandi) to your right, followed by the Srajani Sippagram terracotta toran (gate) to your left. Srirangam is the third house to your left, after you cross the Srajani gate.
