Montescaglioso is an Italian town of 9,942 inhabitants in the province of Matera in Basilicata. Important historical and cultural center, is known as the "city of the Monasteries" for the presence of four monasteries, among which the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo. The territory of Montescaglioso, as well as that of Matera, lies in an area archaeological, historical and natural, the Park of the Rock Churches of Matera, which includes about 8000 has [17] of which about 3,500 belong to the common montese. The town is part of the upholstered furniture district of Matera-Montescaglioso [18]. Culturally it must mention the Carnival, one of the most important in the region, whose first official statement dates back to 7 February 1638 [19]. January 9, 2004, by decree of the President of the Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Montescaglioso received the honorary title of City [20] [21], and has obtained the common recognition Jewel of Italy in 2012 [22]. At the demographic level it appears to be the 5th most populated city of the province and the 12th in the region, and is located about 15 km from the provincial capital.
