Port Fitzroy: A Historic and Scenic Harbour
Port Fitzroy, located on Great Barrier Island, boasts a rich history and is home to Kaiaraara Bay—the largest inlet in the area. Known for its deep, sheltered waters, it offers safe anchorages for vessels of all sizes, including superyachts and the regularly visiting Spirit of New Zealand. The harbour serves as an essential stop for boats to refuel, collect water, and stock up on supplies.
Especially popular during the Christmas and summer holidays, Port Fitzroy sees a surge in visitors from Auckland. Its calm waters also support aquaculture farms, while the surrounding landscape features numerous walking tracks managed by the Department of Conservation. These trails lead past waterfalls, swimming holes, historic sites, and diverse forests with both native and exotic trees.
The Port Fitzroy and North Barrier area have a long and shared history. Originally inhabited by Ngāti Wai, the region saw the arrival of European settlers in 1838. Today, descendants of both communities continue to live in the area, maintaining its rich cultural heritage.
