Mértola has a rich history dating back to the Roman period, passing through the Arab domination that left a deep mark on the local architecture and culture. The town is a veritable open-air museum with several well-preserved and unique historic buildings such as the Igreja Matriz de Mértola, which was originally a mosque. Located in the Guadiana Valley Natural Park, it offers breathtaking views over the Guadiana River and the surrounding countryside. Hiking trails and boat trips are popular with those wishing to explore the region's natural beauty.
