One of the highlight hotels we stayed at during our driving trip around Honshu. The hotel in all aspects is relaxing from the time you settle in and pop down for a free coffee or glass of spirits to relaxing in the hot on-site Onsen. Wandering through the charming village was also a bonus as it is the home of the small wooden dolls called Kokeshi (you will want to buy them all but reality always dictates the situation). A must visit is to the Kokeshi Museum (DO NOT GO TO THE FALSE ONE) but one has to ask to see the oldest doll in the collection. Neat collection of simple Japanese art form in wooden dolls. Eating in the town is a must especially in the traditional eateries on the main street and then wandering through the backstreets checking out the way the Japanese harvest their grapes from under the vines not as done in OZ. I liked everything. The place is very well located, close to the train station and you can visit a lot of things from there: hiking, other onsens or Kokeshi shops. The onsen itself was super nice with two different onsens switching morning and evening. One especially has an awesome view. Also the buffet was amazing. Go for it.

our first impression is staffs who help us at parking. Then we are so surprised it has massage chair in our room. and we impressed in Large Dinner shabu and Tempura ... so WOW. and several thing in Breakfast. We love all that in this hotel and onsen is very well. Clean and nice. We love them all. All staffs are so cute even in garden.

Faded grandeur, once a pretty fancy hotel it is now a bit tatty around the edges but that is part of it's charm, lovely big rooms. It's a long way from the station, don't try to walk it if your bag is heavy, just get a taxi. Good ramen place next door. There is a shuttle bus to take you back to the station on departure.

Top-tier luxury. This place is what you get when you give someone a very generous budget and ask them to dream up the most comfortable Ryokan they can think of. The whole place was in tatami mats and it was comfortable to walk about barefoot or with socks. The baths themselves were the best out of all the ryokans that I have tried. They offered a range of different shampoos and soaps, and multiple indoor and outdoor baths - ranging from stone/natural baths to wooden tubs. There is also a sauna and cold bath, and it is here that I discovered the adrenaline rush and relaxation that comes with alternating between a hot sauna and cold bath. There are also privates baths (yes there are two!) that are free for use, unlike other ryokans that charge you for them. There are free treats everywhere - ice pops and milk (my favourite!) at the baths, various snacks and drinks (coffee, various teas, vinegar drink and even beer and shochu!). Then at 10-10.30pm, you can get a bowl of ramen, with the Akita specialty: Fish Shottsuru. Best, most premium and complete bath amenities out of all the ryokans I have visited. They also have well-placed cold water dispenser and places where you can simply sit after your bath to enjoy the view. They also offer a "pillow library" where you can personally compare different types of pillows and choose the ones that you like best! Best facilities out of all the ryokans I've been to (perhaps to make up for the lack of things to do by way of local attractions and how isolated it is). There are traditional Japanese children's games, origami and even a quaint library. Layout of the room is great too - I like that there is a separate "reception" area where you can keep your bags and clothes separate from the main sleeping/living quarters. I also like the little table in front of the window - perfect for a quiet reflection.

My favorite hotel during my stay in Japan. Staff was so helpful even though I did not speak any Japanese. Their hospitality was unmatched, could not thank them enough.

- The wood interior and scent is decent. - The owner is hospitable and provides useful tourist information, though we haven't met in person. 🙂 - The vibe of the public space is awesome (had a good chat there). - The housewares are clean and new, including the powerful washing machine. - Free snack, tea and coffee are provided. - The room is also spacious and comfy.
