Loved summer hiking from this beautiful mountain lodge to escape the city heat. 3 minutes walk to bus service with access to multiple trailheads throughout Shiga Kogen. The owners create such a welcoming cosy space to escape - thoughtful, stylish, beautifully presented. Incredible quality in a home-feel environment. Private in-house onsen, superb home cooked meals. Highly recommend both breakfast and dinner (best decision)!

I can recommend Matoi Hostel to the fullest extent! The place is so very well organised and equipped it will be a pleasure for all different kinds of travellers. I arrived by bicycle as it is close to the Tone River Cycling Road. The rooms are very tidy and the kitchen is well equipped. Handouts and prints of the upcoming festivals/attractions are lying everywhere. The owner speaks English very well. But the best thing is the big café and restaurant area, where you'll surely have a great time. I immediately made some friends there. I left a few days for Kusatsu and the owner was happy to store my luggage in a secure cabinet until I return.

- very spacious room! (for Japanese standards) - all equipment was clean and new - very close to Maebashi station - delicious breakfast - free 夜鳴きそば in the evening - polite staff - good air conditioning - sofa and table in the room - shower with good water pressure - water and cake as welcome gift
