This was our final stay in Austria and it was the absolute best! The owners and staff are incredibly welcoming and accommodating in every way. They provide a superb breakfast accompanied by detailed information about possible sight seeing opportunities. This is truly helpful. On New Year’s Eve, they invited guests to join them to raise a toast to the New Year and we got to meet some wonderful people. In the afternoons, delicious coffee, cakes and snacks are offered in the beautiful lounge alongside a wide array of board games. The ability to park next to the hotel, in their private parking area, is a massive bonus. This historical building is outstanding as is the decor. Both rooms were beautifully decorated and the balconies provided great views. Thoughtful welcome gifts were left in the rooms too. We really did not want to leave! Thank you for your gracious hospitality.

The rooms are very clean and, except for the lack of a mini-fridge, well equipped. The balcony was a nice touch. Cleanliness was maintained daily, both around the property and in the room. There was plenty of parking space. By far the aspect I liked the most was how friendly the staff were, especially the people in the restaurant, Matusz, Markus and Karina (hope I spelled it right), who we've interacted with the most. They made our stay decidedly more enjoyable, especially seeing as how most of the country, in general, has a passive-aggressive attitude towards foreigners.

The hotel and the rooms are very pretty and of high quality. The staff are friendly and helpful. The breakfast is included in the price and is very tasty and has large variety of different fresh pastries, cheese and hams. This hotel is quaint and magical, with splendid views of the Wolfgangsee and surrounding mountains along the lakeside path, which you can walk almost the entire distance to St. Gilgen if you like. If you prefer, the ferry stops right next to the hotel. Staff was exceptional and offered ferry tickets at reception. I won't ruin the surprise, but check-out was a nice experience as well. I did not engage in much hiking, but guests receive literature at check-in about the myriad trails of different lengths and levels of challenge, accessible from right at the hotel. I have not been to Hallstatt, but the Wolfgangsee area seems like an excellent alternative without quite as many tourists (but still a lot). Don't forget to take the sielbahn to the Zwölferhorn for stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains, including Zugspitze. St. Gilgen in general is a nice, quaint town with upscale shopping as well as touristy kitch. This stay was well worth the price in my opinion, as it was an unforgettable experience filled with glorious natural beauty and wonderful, luxurious Austrian hospitality.

A more beautiful peaceful vacation could not be imagined.

A more beautiful peaceful vacation could not be imagined. The mountains are breathtaking. The quietness speaks to you, and I left feeling more peaceful than I have in years. We were there in May, and I understand the tourist scene in June and July is a bit busier. There is a lot to do in the village besides gazing at the scenery. Delicious eats, friendly hosts, charming souvenir shops and the ferry that goes up and down the St Wolfgangsee are some of the delights.

Sankt Gilgen was lovely - picture postcard beautiful with plenty to do to keep us busy (lake and mountains walks, boat rides, trains, cable cars). Visiting in September, we found it very quiet at night with very few restaurants open, particularly on a Monday and Tuesday. Finding somewhere to eat on spec is difficult and we would strongly recommend pre-booking if you want to eat out.

We stayed in Abersee close to the port (Gschwendt).

We stayed in Abersee close to the port (Gschwendt). This area is generally quiet particularly at night as it is sparsely populated, with pastures, farms, and indeed guesthouses. There is a public beach excellent for swimming (with paid access, but included in some accommodation; it is grass, pebbles, wooden walkway and stairs to get to water more comfortably). One can also walk along the lake, cycle, or walk further for hiking in the hills. For shopping, sightseeing, restaurants, one needs to take a short drive to St. Gilgen or Strobl.

The timing of our visit (January 7th to 12th) wasn't ideal, as many shops and restaurants were closed during this period. However, for nature enthusiasts Sankt Gilgen was a dream come true! The snow-covered Apls created a magical winter wonderland, offering breathtaking views and landscapes. We had easy access to nearby attractions that are definitely worth exploring, making it a fantastic destination for those who appreciate tranquility and the beauty of nature.
