What did I like about Hotel Villa Flora in Velden am Wörthersee? Quite simply, everything. This charming haven has swiftly claimed the title of my favorite hotel in the region, and I’m already eagerly planning my return for the summer, with my family just as enchanted and ready to book their stay. Nestled in a delightful area, the hotel’s surroundings invite exploration, perfectly complementing the vibrant allure of Velden am Wörthersee. The pool, a sparkling gem, offered moments of pure relaxation, its serene ambiance elevating every dip into a small escape. Breakfast was a daily joy, with an array of fresh, thoughtfully prepared dishes that awakened the senses and set the tone for the day. The rooms—oh, the rooms—were nothing short of stunning, each detail crafted to inspire awe, blending elegance with an inviting warmth that made leaving them bittersweet. Perfectly located on the Worthersee! The dock had plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas and stairs to get into the lake. It DOES have air conditioning, which was nice as temperatures were in the 90’s. A beautiful hotel. The hotel gave us 1 room instead of 2, but made it right and we stayed in a suite for the first night. It also sits on the boardwalk which made a nice walk each evening. I would love to come back here.

It was all positive, the old buildings, town squares, the old restaurants in the "downtown", the spectacular views and restaurants on the lake, walking around those areas around the lake, the weather and how nice everyone was. Plus we have great friends that live there and they are the best, they showed us around to great places and we had a great time.

We caught the train from Pritswich to Portschach which was a very short journey. Their timetables at the station/collection points are so easy to understand. Portschach is a very picturesque place. The houses looked very clean adorned with flowers, very tidy streets. People are very friendly and the majority spoke English. The food was delicious especially the cakes. There was a park area which took you down to the lake. Also a play area for children. We caught the ferry over to Maria Worth and then later, travelled by ferry to Velden.

It was very nice. We enjoyed it here very much. It’s an old castle with fascinating history. At first it was a bit scary, to sleep in a castle, but after a while we fell in love with it. It has some magic about it. We ate in pörtschach in a hawaian restaurant, tasty vegan food. We didn’t try the breakfast. At first look, I felt like running away. At the last one, I felt like I don’t want to leave. It was a unique experience. I’m happy that I experienced this. For sure, if in one word: Extraordinary!

Velden am Wörthersee is a captivating gem, easily my favorite lake destination in Austria alongside the charming Klopeiner See. Just a three-hour drive from Vienna, its accessibility makes it a perfect escape for a weekend or longer. The region radiates vitality, with its sparkling lake inviting swimming and water activities, framed by a picturesque backdrop that feels both serene and vibrant. The restaurants and bars here are a delight, offering a rich tapestry of flavors and atmospheres, from cozy lakeside eateries to lively spots buzzing with energy. Whether it’s savoring a meal with a view or enjoying the warm, welcoming vibe of the town, Velden delivers an all-around exceptional experience that feels like summer distilled into a single place.

Sadly our hotel could not offer an evening meal as they had a group staying, but there are some excellent restaurants in the town: Pörtschacher Stüble, Sissi’s, Werzers Bootshaus (newly opened in May 2025) and Little Italy were our favourites. The young waitress in Little Italy was a lesson in how to wait at tables-such professionalism and always a big smile! We are in our 70s and less mobile than we once were, but getting around was very easy. The ferry runs all day; we spent many happy hours on it. You can buy a day ticket for about 22 euros and can hop on and off. We bought a weekly ticket for 48 euros and got our money’s worth! We loved it so much that I hesitate to tell people about it! Ryanair flies to Klagenfurt twice a week. From there a 15 minute taxi ride brings you to Pörtschach.

Not being too close to Vienna airport I probably should have planned for a couple of nights stay in Vienna either side of the trip, so that the travel to/from Worthersee was not too much of a headache/rush. The train journey was excellent, except, when our initially cancelled and subsequently delayed flight(s) eventually arrived, we had missed the last train, at 7.30pm, and the taxi fare was massive; so we only got to experience the train on the way back. The connections for the train were really good, and the views were amazing. Would recommend, but plan the stay around the travel.
